How do I use Consolas on GNU/Linux?

i use the linux libertine family. libertine, biolinum, and libertine mono.

i'm pretty sure inconsolata is meant to replace consolas. it should be in most distro repos.

Some fag here was testing out some chinese font and it was pretty cool, I used that for a while. Sadly I can't remember the name anymore. I don't even remember what it was for

You copy it over from a licensed installation of Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Office (Vista/2007 or higher). For an example, check out the ttf-ms-win8 and ttf-ms-win10 packages in the Arch User Repository.
(Semi-)piracy option: Acquire an evaluation copy of Win10 Enterprise and extract fonts using wimextract or p7zip from install.wim inside the ISO. The virtual machines on modern.ie work too, use qemu-nbd to mount virtual disk images as block devices.

Much appreciated.

Lol. Inconsolata doesn't come close to Consolas. Freefags wish they had this.

Anonymous Pro.
Use it at all IDEs / Terminals.

i'm pretty sure you can install the mscorefonts package or something like that and get the microsoft fonts. i've never tried it because i'm not a faggot about the way my pc looks.

rtrd

I installed it because sometimes Wintards make PDFs that use MS fonts and the kerning ends up fucked when you substitute another font.

>mscorefonts package
Doesn't come with Consolas.

Nobody really recommends installing the Core Fonts anymore, even when they're still available in redistributable format. On the one hand they're still in TrueType format and lack some OpenType features that can be used with FreeType, on the other hand they only consist of the classic fonts:
* Arial (Black)
* Andalé Mono [only a decent monospace font if you lack anti-aliasing]
* Courier New
* Comic Sans MS
* Georgia
* Impact
* Times New Roman
* Trebuchet MS
* Verdana
* Webdings [nobody ever used that for webglyphs, really]

Not even close, look at those italics. Levien has said Inconsolata is inspired by Consolas but not meant to be a replacement. It's not a bad font but Consolas is superior.

>caring about italics in a monospace font
what are you doing with it that you need italics? it's close enough for anybody who's not painfully autistic. the italic 'i' in consolas looks like shit anyway, it's not as oblique as the rest of the characters. they both look like comic sans version 2 but if that's what you're into then they're essentially the same font.

I always use the defaults. I feel turbopleb atm desu.

this as it's etched into every vga compatible graphics circuit

>what are you doing with it that you need italics?
What are you doing that you need a pretty font? This entire discussion is an aesthetic one, and Consolas is aesthetically superior to Inconsolata. Most syntax highlighting themes nowadays make use of italics so having a font with good italics is a bonus.

too bad the italics are inconsistent and it looks like comic sans to begin with.

Attached: retarded_consolas.png (395x355, 9K)

This is how an italicized i looks like in most italics fonts. Inconsalata's "italics" can barely be called that, they're just slanted.

Iosevka Medium, because it renders nicely on my screen.

Not quite every one, despite the fact the IBM font was later carried on by loadable DOS/Linux fonts and the Windows terminal. Some OEM vendors adapted it, the ATI font used in pre-Radeon cards may be the most prominent (and I can still remember the disgusting AMI BIOS one).

get nice font rendering faggot, any font is fine.
you need to enable the lcd filter, on top of antialiasing and slight hinting. Which is basically default ubuntu

they're not italic, they're oblique. serif fonts generally get italicized whereas sans-serif fonts typically get obliqued. consolas tries and fails to do both. the more i look at it the more i realize it's unironically the worst font i've ever seen.
