I've let my health go a bit downhill in the past few months (poor diet, less exercise, too much TV/vidya), and have noticed a marked decrease in my ability to read and write code as well as apply critical reasoning towards challenging problems at work.
What does Jow Forums do to keep their mind sharp, beyond just working a lot and staying healthy? I've been using anki for fact retention and brainHQ for brain activity.
Brainhq is a scam. Brain training apps are proven not to work.
Sleep, exercise, diet. Avoid anything that messes with those three.
Isaac Edwards
Does sleep time matter? As in like, sleep at 4am and wake at 12pm? That's still 8 hours.
Wyatt Wood
No, only the amount of sleep, 8 hours is more than enough, the thing that matters the most are your circadian rhythms, meaning you should daily go to sleep at the same time and wake up at same time
Justin Cooper
Good to know. Sleeping like that shits up my daily schedule with other people though, so I still need to fix that. Having no self control sucks
Jonathan Parker
get treated, "modafinil" is an excellent means off cutting through braing fog
Alexander Nguyen
Yes. Waking up in the morning and not the afternoon makes a difference. Sunshine and good lighting contribute to happiness in the scheme of mental health. Take melatonin to reset your sleeping time.
Here's what I take to stay sharp >magnesium >Adderall >melatonin Meme drug. Take one 13h Sudafed instead or buy the completely legal version Adrafinil.
Hunter Wood
FACE IT: You're a dumb FUCK who doesn't even fit into the average intelligence bracket, accept it and move on. Nothing you do can increase your IQ, the only thing you can do is lower it with drugs/booze.
I've come to accept that and I'm better because of it. I don't have to worry about what fractional polynomial vector function flim-flam I can do with a blindfold on while upside down, I just live life the best way I can. If anyone is half as smart as they claim they wouldn't fucking be here wasting their time like us, they would instead get shit done and crush their enemies whilst contemplating ways to further their long term financial and spiritual goals.
Trying to quit coffee right now, what's the point of drinking if I feel like I NEED it, instead of thinking it as a helpful substance when I really need something to give me a second wind

>NEETs need not reply
What the hell is this?
I have lots of good advice to give on this subject, but I'm not going to bother because of this comment. Normalfag.
Samuel Bell
It does matter, although is secondary to sleep amount and sleep time regularity. You'll sleep better if your bed time is within a few hours after sunset since that's what your circadian rhythm is going to be synced to due to sunlight and temperature (you are spending plenty of time outside, as you should for optimal health, aren't you?).
>just add another pill Have you heard of our lord and savior, via negativa?
Cooper Diaz
If you're gonna go the drug route why not inject molten heroin into your veins? At least then you can pretend the drug is making you smarter without feeling like shit for a little while.
Ayden Myers
Can't tell desu. Sleep quality matters too, not just hours spent, most circumstances 8h should be enough. There needs to be right amount of deep sleep and light sleep, and of course there shouldn't be cuts(btw you can't self diagnose these without some tracker device). Avoid caffeine, alcohol altogether Before sleeping avoid eating, exercising, stress and light. Go to sleep at the same moment every day and make sure it's not too hot, since you get best sleep at slightly cold setting.
Ethan Ortiz
I'm too pussy desu. Weed already makes me incredibly paranoid and I'm afraid of the long-term affects making me worse rather than better
Jose James
Why not instead of coffee just inject heroin? Same retarded logic.
Ethan Ross

Zinc before sleep and magnesium right after wake up.
Try to avoid blue light on the night. Try to do some breathing exercise in the morning.
Wyatt Morris
I know I'm a dumb FUCK but I still believe that there is a min and max range at which my brain is capable of functioning and what I'm trying to figure out is how to attain the maximum.

>he doesn't know that everyone in a fortune 500 are actually on drugs, just not the shit ones Some tech workers that patronize the same place I go to get about 100mgs of Adderall a day.
Sauce on brain training apps being scams? I don't pay for it and Tom Brady had a reasonably compelling testimonial so I'm inclined to continue using.
Christian Gray
On board with magnesium and melotonin but I've never tried Adderall. Is it worth the hassle to BS my way into a prescription if I've never used it? I have an addictive personality so it worries me that I could become too dependent.
Chase Sullivan
Anki is pretty legit, just started using it for my studies. Slowly creating decks for my current classes. Might sell them to my classmates for a small premium.
Mason Myers
Why is it so important to take zinc before sleep, and magnesium right after waking up specifically? Isn't that stuff absorbed slowly over time?
Gavin Nguyen
Adderal is not same modafinil.
Alexander Edwards
Try other weed strain or smoke in smaller amounts.
Leo Torres
Has the recent weight gain been accompanied by any urges to code less and fight for freedom more?
Flashcards are pretty legit. I studied some supermemo things like 5+ years back, and I still remember half
Justin Reyes
As far as I know dual n-back is the only program that has some iq enhancing studies behind it and that is free. But iq itself is a flimsy concept and only good for weeding out brainless at the lower end. Trying to increase by small digits amount of points to isn't really worth the time when you could be doing something that is more useful with that time. It's all tradeoffs of course, it's better than many things because at least it's not destructive in any way. Getting rid of habits that are destructive gets you pretty far.
Grayson Jenkins
Correct, it's much more effective. :^) If you don't mind selling your soul for a few years of being a rockstar, go for it. The reason the drug is so effective is because it sells the user into a cult of overachievement. Then to keep up with their professional personas, you get these tech workers upping their dose all the way up to the absurd ~100mg I mentioned.
I'm more or less actually ADHD so I didn't bs anyone. But all you have to do is find a doctor that's keen to serving the right demographic.
Gavin Nelson
I asked my shrink for modafinil and she was like lol no way, that's for narcoleptic and can cause a deadly skin condition. I actually know a narcoleptic and for some reason they didn't even give her Modafinil, she's got adderal
Joseph Thomas
What can you say, that's physician's discretion. It's usually Dexedrine that's indicated for narcolepsy though.
Joshua Long
I've been prescribed Concerta XR, which has helped quite a bit in my studies. black coffee helps too.
Creatine helps, as well as sleep and working out.
Adrian Sullivan
Amphetamines make you more rude. Most programmers and engineers are already shit at social skills so I can't see amphetamines helping if your aim is some social climb. You get some benefit but it isn't free.
Gabriel Brown
Concerta is not a good drug. it has terrible side effects, aderal is healthier
Owen Rodriguez
disagree, at least for those who have social anxiety related to adhd.
Helped me immensely, I'm able to keep up with my coworkers without finishing their thoughts before they finish their sentences.
Gavin Powell
I have literally none of the side effects listed on the website, and I take concerta on a completely empty stomach through intermittent fasting.
I've never had adarall, but due to circumstances I'm not about to start experimenting again, or even ask to switch drugs. What I take is effective for what I need it for.
Jordan Murphy
it can cause terrible sickness in brain
Aaron Thompson
>Amphetamines make you more rude. It makes you the snarky, uppity kind of social. If you're good at your job nobody will mind the snark. In fact that's basically called being the fucking manager.
Nolan Williams
Cardio. Forget medication (for now). If you are a fatass, do something like elliptical.
Hudson Reyes
I have experience acting on stage and before I performed, I swallowed 1 x 5 mg aderal. it enhanced my performance and lifted my mood. I don't think my stage acting career would have took off so well without it

Came to shill creatine and exercise. Don't get the sugar flavor crap. Pure creatine is fine and you can barely taste it.
Samuel Hill
I always drink one cup of black coffee in the morning and take creatine after every workout. I've never heard of any benefits of creatine besides ~5% strength gain.
Easton Morgan
Nofap. Quit jacking off to porn, and quit jacking off period. Takes about 90 days to reboot your dopamine receptors or longer if you're severely addicted. Mental clarity will return and brain fog will lift off.
I usually just put the creatine in my mouth and drink some water. That way I know I'm getting the exact amount I want instead of wasting it in the water. It tastes like absolutely nothing, and has a pretty smooth mouth feel. Creatine can help with mental functions. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29704637

My only problem with this life optimization stuff is how autisticly repetitive your life becomes. Always same sleep schedule, meditate to reduce stress, exercise routines. Foods with certain macros micros. Make lists of actions and cross them once done. Anki deck time. Avoid bunch of stuff. It makes life feel like a game where you collect points for all these the things.
I also flood my brain with dopamine on a daily basis with prescription Adderall made in Jewish factories. You too thanks.
Matthew James
Wrong. Sleep timing doesn't matter, just the quantity. People are genetically predisposed to a particular sleep and waking time and fighting that is nearly impossible. See: Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker (professor of neuroscience and psychology)
Gavin Torres
Plus there is no limit to how much more you can optimize each 'subgategory'.
Jonathan Brown
You don't need to do that. Just start exercising and lose the skinny fat. The guys talking about low sex drive are probably eating like shit and sitting down all day. Testosterone levels and sperm counts have fallen in western men because of toxins in the environment compounded by a sedentary lifestyle fueled by mcheartattack burgers. The best way to combat that is not to stop watching porn, but to fucking get off your ass for once.
Adrian Roberts
Quality matters and that's why timing matters. Unless you live in some perfectly sealed container, there is bound to be more interruptions in certain times of the day. An ambulance drives past your house and now your sleep cycle is has to start all over. This is why night is best time for sleep, less chance for interruptions.
Isaiah Edwards
Why the fuck would an ambulance be driving by your house often enough to regularly disrupt your sleep? If that's the case, you need earplugs and a sound conditioner (noise machine) to counteract the fact that you chose a retarded place to live.
Jack Baker
Good call. Going for a mtn. bike ride in 10 minutes.
Josiah Bailey
True, placebo does work, was just saying that because if I could convince myself of that, others may not. And in the grand scheme of things I don't really care how it works, I get to stay fit and get more shit done, that's everything I care for.
Jose Lopez
exercise, fasting, provigil, proper amount of sleep, avoid distractions
Hunter Wood
Meat is good for you, endocrine-disrupting chemicals are not good for you. Xenoestrogens are the source of your disdain for meat.
Dominic Sanders
Ambulance was just an example. There are million other things that make noises. Truth is, there are less noise making disruptions around you when it's nighttime. You can't get around that. >regularly disrupt It doesn't have to be regular
Thomas James
I guess the brain fog hasn't left you, yet. The problem is not meat itself, but all synthetic crap shoved into the junk food (which includes those xenoestrogens you just mentioned), and the carbs in the garbage processed bread. The carbs, especially. Personally, it's the bread that makes me feel like shit if I get too much of it. Meat is fine, though where it comes from is also important.
Joseph Reyes
its because the pharmaceutical industry is entirely mediated to you through a single person that is going by a guidebook given to them by those pharmaceutical companies and as far as they know they shouldn't deviate from it.
why would they write down something with a lower long term profit potential in their guidebook? why do you think there's an opoid crisis?
also, relying on gatekeepers for literally anything is how you train your brain to be complacent and stupid and not able to think for yourself. using brain training software and websites to 'keep sharp' is like using reddit to keep informed on current events. get fucking real. read stuff, go in depth, push yourself to find alternative pathways even when there is an easier path - just so you know you can do it another way. that's how you keep sharp and get good at learning. not doing a bunch of fucking math problems on your nintendo
Zachary Brown
take X, Y, and Z drugs because they will make you like, totally woke man. maybe the pharmacist said so because it will fucking kill you, ever thought about that huh?

easiest way to reach it is by eating eggs and cheeses only. Most eggs are clean by nature, and the preservatives in them are pretty tame compared to what they put in meat and grain. After you reach ketosis for the first time this way, start adding stuff one by one until something triggers the fog. the whole process only takes 2 days, 12 hours if you do an hour of cardio.
Nicholas Scott
Drugs turn you into a zombie.
Luis Wright
its not even the processed stuff or the synthetic stuff. it's literally just a handful of cheap things that companies use in their products that are absolutely terrible for you. if you cut out: >trans fats >palm kernel oil, hydrogenated oils >fructose (yes, that means sucrose too)
you will immediately be better off. even if you eat beef jerky all the time and drink diet soda. those substances are literally poison.
the human body is incredible in what fuel it can survive on. that doesn't mean you should subject it to the worst possible things when we live in the 21st century and even wal mart sells acceptable food if you make responsible purchasing and dietary decisions informed by the dietary label rather than what the food markets itself as
William Allen
you've clearly never been to a psychiatrist because the primary concern is how good a drug is at solving the problem being experienced based on pharmacy recommendation
they do not make decisions based on which drug causes the lowest side effects, they make decisions based on what drugs are recommended for use in treatment of a problem. the better recommendation, that's what you get prescribed. it doesn't matter if you have a well researched argument as to why you should be prescribed a specific drug based on the side effects or its potential risk of killing you. it's literally not even a point of consideration. if you experience side effects they tell you to stop taking it and try the next one on the list
Brody Morgan
>psychiatrist No, I don't have mental problems

You wouldn't be on Jow Forums if you didn't, you're just too dumb to realise it.

reposting some shit:
First, You don’t want to lower your weight, you want to slim down. Lower weight could mean less water, less muscle, weaker bones, you just went to the bathroom, etc. The simplest metric you can do in your home is to use a measuring tape on your arms and belly. Just make sure to do it in the same place every time. -Drink lots of water (at least 2L a day) since it improves your metabolism. Even if you’re not thirsty at the beginning, your body will adapt and return to a healthy thirst state with some time. -Reduce the portion of carbohydrates you eat (anything with wheat or corn, rice, fructose, potatoes, milk and sweet fruits like bananas, mangos or pineapple ). The point of this is to reduce your blood glucose; if you have high blood glucose, your body will release high amounts of insulin. This hormone is the one that builds fat, but if you have an excess, it will make you hungrier and it also screws with your thyroid gland which slows your metabolism.
-Sleep! When you don’t sleep properly, your blood sugar will be high in the morning even if you didn’t eat something with a high glycemic index on the night before. Sleep at least 7 hours a day. Try to not eat carbohydrates 4 hours before going to sleep, since insulin also fucks with the sleep hormones (Technically, veggies are also carbohydrates, but you can eat them before sleep since they have a low GI (glycemic index). Your body reacts very different when you eat a bowl of salad than if you eat a bowl of cereal. By the way, do not eat cereals. They are not healthy since they are basically starch and your body turns them into pure glucose when you eat them)
Joseph Green
-Doing 5 or 6 meals a day like a lot of cheap nutritionists recommend is retarded. If you do this, you will keep releasing Insulin through all the day. You don’t want this, since when you have high insulin in your bloodstream, it also suppress the production of “Leptin”. Leptin is the hormone your fat cells produce to inform your body that they are ready to be burned to produce energy. So only make a 3 meals a day. -Your plate basically should be made by: >a third of meat >a third of salad >a third of anything else you want For example, salad (lettuce, tomato, avocado), chicken/beef, two slices of bread. Even If you’re eating a small piece of cake (small!) thanks to the fiber of the salad (remember to eat even more salad), your blood sugar will not spike much (just don’t make it an habit).
Brayden Long
-Fuck Hunger. Those diets that make you have hunger all day long are terrible for multiple reasons. If you’re hungry, try this: >You didn’t eat enough. Add more protein (any meat. Not grains) and salad for your next meal. >You have low amounts of potassium, magnesium, chromium, copper. For several reasons, your cells need these vitamins and minerals to create energy. If they can’t, your body will make you hungry. >Your body produce hunger when you have need for others vitamins and minerals. Get a high quality supplement (not those cheap supermarket ones that doesn’t even have what they say on the label). This is VERY important or you wouldn’t be able to lower weight. For example, if you have a need for iodine (a lot of fat people do), your thyroid gland wouldn’t be able to work properly and you will accumulate fat like crazy, have low energy, you hair will fall down, you will be depressed (you will be surprised by amount of depressed people that would be healed with a good supplement and by not eating some stuff like onions. Seriously, do not eat onions.) >You’re not drinking the water your body needs. A lot of people with bad diet confuse the feeling of thirst for hunger.
Exercise as the other anons said is very important and it is something you should do. But if you’re fat, you may not have the energy to do exercise. Just apply what I said up there and do exercise once you’re ready. Even 15 mins of HIT will make a difference.
Nolan Smith
>low calorie foods like popcorn, rice cakes No. Calorie counting is an old meme. Not all calories are the same. Also corn and rice have a high glycemic index. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will be hungry all day. Being hungry is the worst thing you can do when you want to lower weight since your body will burn muscle instead of fat and it will lower your metabolism. Even if you manage to slim down with this, your skin will make you look like a pug.
>Calorie counting is an old meme. Not all calories are the same.
I forgot to explain that. For example, if you eat 100 calories of cookies, your blood sugar would spike way more, and your body would produce more insulin that if you ate 100 calories of meat.
As an extra:
1. Cholesterol isn't bad at all, ignore anyone who says otherwise (but you should take care of your triglycerides. Remember high carbohydrates=high triglycerides)
2. Salt isn't bad for you. Just make sure to have a high intake of potassium, magnesium and drink enough water. This misconception comes from the effect it seem to have on your blood pressure (it increased it), but the real culprit (again) was insulin. If you have high blood insulin, it screws with the kidney capacity of disposing salt, which now in turn will increase your blood pressure. You can even eat twice the amount the American Hearth Association recommends without problem (in fact, having low sodium blood concentration can fuck with your health and make you harder to lose weight)
Ian Lewis
>Technically, veggies are also carbohydrates, but you can eat them before sleep since they have a low GI (glycemic index)
Also, most of the carbs in veggies are fiber. It doesn't get digested, and you will excrete it once you got to the bathroom.
Liam Jenkins
i was diagnosed bipolar because those diagnostic criteria decided the reaction i had to an antidepressant given to me as a child meant i was bipolar. because those diagnostic criteria decided the behavior i had as a child meant i should be given antidepressants
which is probably true, but a half decent diet, regular exercise and self control are how i deal with it rather than taking a bunch of drugs that destroy your ability to mediate your behavior as an individual
Landon Hall
From my experience the repetitiveness becomes second nature after sticking with it for a while. The idea is that these motions are the building blocks of your life – the foundation. Where you get variety and excitement is from spending your newfound energy on new creative endeavors, making new friends, picking up girls, etc. Just my 2c. Sadly I've never been able to convert a strong foundation into tangible gains.

Yeah welcome to the pharmaceutical industry. Benzodiazepines have been proven to not be effective long term mantinence medication for almost every use case they are prescribed for outside of seizures and yet they are prescribed carte blanche because people don't report the negative side effects because Benzos are addictive and don't want to get taken off of them.

Solid advice but what's the sauce on onions being bad? I go ham on onions and garlic on a daily basis.

Are you implying that Tom Brady is using steroids or just that he has lax morals? I don't even watch football but I think one would be hard-pressed to deny his athletic and mental prowess.
