use bitmap fonts, or ttfs that have pixmap hinting for specific sized.
sans fonts have better legibility than serif, but sitka is an excellent serif if ypu must use one.
garamond styled serifs are better than slab serifs or didones.
liberation serif is good for libre, but caslon or other professional tyoefaces are usually better
for legibility, varying stroke widths are better than uniform, which is why segoe >>> hellvetica or sanfrancisco
lato is another example of a high quality libre font which has varying widths.
mild asymmetry is great for legibility, so unironically comic sans is one of the best fonts.
the trouble is that all caps or small caps is horrible for legibility, lowercase characters are easier on the eyes.

I unironically got an email today saying that a certain font that the company works at is copyrighted and charges are being threatened, so they've created a program that will scan all the documents on my hard drive and send an "alert" if that font was used. Apparently my company used it a lot. I didn't run the fucking program yet but jesus.. what the fuck?

They gave us the name of the company suing for it too. We're not the only company in the lawsuit. They are suing a bunch of them for using their special font. I didn't even know this was possible. We're not a US company either so US law might be different but I'm just trying to imagine how petty you can possibly be to sue over this. We aren't a design company or anything. We work in education..
