the smaller the process, the smaller the chip size can be , and the more chips you can get from the same sized wafer. That's the ideal scenario, but in reality a lot of the time they will just use the extra space to make the same sized die as before but just pack more in it. You can also get lower power consumption in many cases . I'm not an expert but that is a general idea of why
