Freelance Programming

How does a loser 3rd year CS student get into online programming freelance stuff, with a mainly Java background?
It seems like everyone on UpWork just wants a new Uber, or a gambling website.

Why would you want to start as freelancer with no work experience?

That's fucking stupid. You should only be programming things that are useful to you then releasing them. Nobody wants your quick buck programs, Pajeet.

No luck getting an internship this summer, don't want to keep doing hospitality shit.

No.

>No.
Tell me this, Raj. Have you ever written anything worth some rupees? Do you really think anyone with an IQ higher than room temperature writes code for those bullshit bounty sites?

>Implying I'm actually Indian
How would you make money?

>internship
>working basicly for free

its 2k19, everyone is looking for IT devs.
Just use your social network and let someone sneak you into the company and get a real job.

its easy

The difficulty is that I have to return to uni in September for another year, so I'm not sure how likely anyone would be to hire me for a serious dev role.

i would ask around your college's career center, lot of companies look for cheap student labor, you'll be underpaid but not as bad as an internet freelancer

Java is enterprise/large corporations. Data science with java is something to look into. Also learn SQL and COBOL.

Data science has always seemed cool. Any idea if the AWS data science course is any good, or if it'd be too platform specific?

I feel like I kinda know SQL, but I'm not sure how much I need to know to *know* it. I've never looked at COBOL, should be worth a try since I've got nothing but time, thanks!

I have been trying but it's hard and I've been at it for a year and a half. I'm just writing stuff on github, submitting code to other people's repos and maintaining my portfolio site.

One thing I think is important is getting some recommendations and testimonials from anybody possible. It's hard to convince potential clients they can trust you even if you have a website and stuff since some people just fake their experience

I am not speaking with any Authority here as I'm pretty much starting out myself. I have all of one programming and one management information systems course under my belt. I'm going to spend the next year working through pic related and move onto Algorithms 4e concurrently with Microsoft certifications (MOS , MTA in DB Fundamentals) and finishing my degree. My degree is in electives right now so I need to declare and then spend the next two years banging shit out. Back to school at 31.

Fix some things on GitHub for free. When people start depending on you, you start asking for money.

learn something about sales and selling

To what end?

Interesting, thanks. Information systems is the main thing my degree completely skips over, so I think that's a good area for me to focus.

I've always felt too lost to jump into someone else's project without induction, any tips?

>To what end?
Money brah! The most important product you can learn to sell is yourself.

>I've always felt too lost to jump into someone else's project without induction, any tips?
Yeah just jump in.

>I've always felt too lost to jump into someone else's project without induction, any tips?
Find a project that is actively seeking help.

you can start by not being a name faggot

>namefag

It's helping clarify who he is for the sake of this discussion. Go be a faggot somewhere else.

its pretty obvious when someone is or isnt op

Look at Jow Forums trash/aco/weg threads and start programming for unity/renpy porn games for dosh.

Imagine countless customers with a budget of 300$
Waiting for you to invent the app that will change the world

Hotdog.
not hotdog.

If you're willing to do webdev, it's really easy. Go to local groups and clubs and whatnot, say you'll make them a website for x cost or y per hour. Make it in Six or Wordpress. Make sure to put a footer or something that links back to you. If you're professional and do a good job, you'll get referrals from the people you work with. Ive been doing that since I was 16(now 19). Very easy money.

>Six
Wix

Not op. Are meetup.com groups worth it for networking?

The only real freelance work that exists is open source projects, and making web pages for old lady piano teachers and your burnout retard friend who bedazzles rims. There’s more money in the latter but the former looks better on resumes.

The best thing you can do is personal projects. Build a ESX host and spin up a bunch of CentOS servers for Plex and Minecraft and write some shitty bash or powershell scripts. Document the everloving piss out of it and put it on your github

Is there good money to made from porn games tho ?

Where have you been?

Someone else is gonna have to chime in here. I only looked for clients offline. After the initial 4 or 5, the rest came to me.
