it isn't. it's only shilled by Jow Forums autists

>Budgie/Cinnamon for features to resource balance
>KDE for full functionality, at the cost of complexity (don't use on laptops)
>Guh-nome for the mentally-handicapped/children

lil mouse fella

>no feature updates since 2015
It's good by 2009 standards. It needs to have high dpi scaling to be good in this decade.

More like guh-nome for something that looks nice, is highly customizable, and has tons of great programs like Nautilus and System Monitor. All the other DEs are ass ugly, especially KDE with its gigantic fucking clock in the bottom right corner.

>gigantic clock
Did you even bother with resizing anything or are you using all DE's in stock configuration?

He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse.
I don't know why. I call him Gerald.

If it looks like that by default, it's not worth my time. What's the point of a DE if I'll have to manually fix all the shitty design decisions myself anyway.

It's the perfect DE for ex-Windows users

>resource consumption matched by cinnamon
What? Even Gnome is lighter than Cinnamon

>>resource consumption matched by *functional* DE's like Budgie and Cinnamon
>Cinnamon
opinion discarded

>>KDE for full functionality, at the cost of complexity (don't use on laptops)
KDE is perfectly fine on laptops that aren't from the literal 90s.

>gaynome
>highly customisable
setting a GTK theme isn't high levels of customisation tard.
>doesn't remove stock clock
>doesn't know what settings is
confirmed tard

It does exactly what I expect, and nothing else. No surprises. Just works.

>setting a gtk theme
Probably not for long

you

because it's a standard desktop. xfce, mate and the lx desktops are so great because they give you a lot of funtionallity without consuming cpu, ram and disk space. gnome eats ram and cpu like crazy and kde is bloated as hell and pretty buggy
>inb4 kde never crashed for me!
good for you

>This is aimed at distributions breaking apps by default,
>not tinkerers playing with their own setup.
>Please read the letter all the way
>Please

this. seriously you people actually need to read it instead of blindly raging. they look like fucking retards

I read it all the way, but knowing Gnome’s way of handling problems i wouldn’t be surprised if they just end up removing the ability to theme altogether.

macOS desktop for poorfags

>Budgie
>features
It's literally a less customizable Xfce.
>cinnamon
It has a shit panel compared to Xfce.

i use xfce4-panel with openbox cause there's honestly no better replacement. kinda sucks from resource perspective (panel takes up more mem than the wm)

>>KDE for full functionality, at the cost of complexity (don't use on laptops)
Werks on my machine.

what? use tint2

Try tint2 or lxpanel.

tint2 is too much pain to set up, for me anyway
haven't tried lxpanel yet

>800mhz cpu
>512mb ram
>MX Linux 32-bit
>XFCE
>100% CPU usage
...can't do anything, takes 5 mins for the shutdown/log off prompt to pop up after pressing the power button.

>WinXP 32-bit
>same specs
>no problems

Hmmm...well at least the install is smaller than WinXP I guess.

>2019 software vs 2001 software

Both run latest firefox. Min requirements for MX Linux are within the hardware's range. The DE is so poorly optimized that it shits all over "underpowered" hardware trying to do exactly what decades old software did well on far worse hardware. That is pretty telling.

her name is Xue and she is my waifu

show us your task manager

MX isn't installed anymore and it would be whatever is there when you first install and run it all automatically. I couldn't open or do anything even after an hour of letting the netbook sit be itself.

there must have been someting eating all your resources in the background. xfce always ran fine on my old laptops. a minimal debian install would run much better than MX

MX installed super fast and seemed fast overall. Just the DE killed it. Oh, and I wouldn't have been able to bring up anything to take a screenshot. I had to hard restart the netbook.

It's a perfectly ordinary desktop and doesn't try to fuck with things.
The panels in Xfce are reasonably nice, too.

The worst thing I can think of in Xfce offhand is how it handles desktop icons, and that largely doesn't matter to people on Jow Forums.
The second worst thing is that some of the settings are spread out for no fucking reason.

it works
used it on my potato netbook and turn it into pretty good performance

Based on windows XP.
Minimal but flexible.

That's Whiskers!
Tux's little bud.

yo im about to instlal linux mint should i get xfce or mate as desktop??

XFCE and MATE are kind of like XP interface.
Cinnamon is more like windows 7.

This is endearing.

StumpWM

Still more stable and visually appealing than KDE.

you are a genuinely hoe

>you are a genuinely hoe
This is certainly news to me.
Fascinating...

I love how CTRL + F in Thunar opens up a search box at the bottom that is essentially a finger box, does absolutely nothing. Cracks me up everytime.

holy shit I can feel your anger from reading that. thunar does suck but...wow

I've used both xfce4-panel and lxpanel. Both do pretty much the same think and look the same. Some differences I noticed:
>on xfce-panel your workspace switcher has the option to only show the workspace numbers and not the windows on them
>lxpanel gives you the option to use a seoarate gtkrc. I ise this for having icons in the application menu, but nowhere else
>xfce-panel can be vertical (not sure if lxpanel can)
>lxpanel is smaller when ot comes to packege size
The last aspect is why I chose lxpanel.

Because it uses gtk2. Next release will be fully gtk3, sadly.

cringe rat apologist

lxpanel can do vertical but it is a little clumsy with things like the audio volume icon and system tray. it's not bad though if you use icon only window buttons.

And he hasn't got a house?

OK, but try to change your volume

>it isn't
Wrong.

XFCE is only popular because it's vaguely Windows-like whilst being somewhat lightweight, stable, and customizable. Use it for long enough, though, and you'll realize there are better things out here--XFCE has a ton of annoying and inexcusable issues. As far as GUI-based/GUI-configured, lightweight setups are concerned, Openbox+tint2 (or some other panel) is MUCH better than XFCE, save for the initial configuration (which takes all of 5 minutes, and half of which are things you have to do on XFCE anyway, like installing compton).

Wtf I love xfce now?

You think it's good because you're a brainlet that depends on a "desktop environment"

wow so cool. i hope some day i look this cool on the internet.

>You think it's good because you're a brainlet that depends on a "desktop environment"
oh sweet jesus i hope this is bait.
no one outside of Jow Forums and Jow Forumsunixporn cares.
