A standard GNU/Linux + SystemD + Desktop installation is barely ~2GB smaller.

They probably have the pre-installed program (forgot it's name) that predicts what programs you would run and cashes them into RAM.

There is no "better" or "worse" OS in general. If you use terms like that you're literally too stupid to understand the point of different OSes.
Using less resources doesn't mean shit when it can't utilize resources well either. Like direct drive access each time instead of file cache in RAM for already accessed files.

First of all, if you are running desktop software from the past couple years, your computer should have enough ram that 2gb is not an issue. I have a laptop that is 7 years old which has 8gb ram. If you really don't have ram, then buy some, it's cheap.

Second, the ram usage of a desktop environment (and distro) which isn't tuned for performance is obviously going to be high. You might as well have posted a screenshot of some electron app using up all your memory (gnome is running a bunch of JavaScript bullshit too, btw)

My netbook that has 2gb ram runs openbox and I'm not going to go check the ram usage, but I'd estimate that it probably only needs about 100mb with nothing open. It's one of those laptops that came with a special version of Windows XP, there is no updated usable windows OS that even runs on it these days because windows is so resource hungry. Let's see you run windows 10 on a fucking netbook.

It's actually also made in Python. JavaScript is just used with CSS for theming, Python is used for actual code. That's why GNOME can't use more than a single core.

realistically it will sit on 2-3 GB on most PCs. Or you can just install 7 and have it take 1.7GB with no tricks, no cache, etc.

OS performance? stays the same or worsens of course. But software that demands more RAM will run better (assuming you have little RAM to spare). If you do have RAM to spare it's better to just leave it as it is in most cases.

I'm personally locked to a 2GB laptop with W8.1 x64 and RAM usage usually reaches a max of 1.2-1.4 GB (around 800 MB on idle). I can't imagine W10 being that much different in regards to RAM consumption, again, after a doing some tweaking, and when using a lite ISO? Pfft. I've seen pics at different points of time here in Jow Forums with Anons showing their Lite Windows 10 OSes eating around 450-500 MB on idle.
