Wut dis?
A superior kernel to Linux, written by FSF, straight from the developers of GNU.
Guix/Hurd installed over Gnunet can't come fast enough.
Finally, a kernel to surpass Linux.
Superior in what?
IN FREEDOM
Linux is free software, are you saying that some free software is freer than others?
Linux merely switched to being free, while FSF introduced the very concept of freedom upon our imperfect world.
Did GuixSD release a Hurd install image, yet? I'm waiting forever, you know!?
Post your HURD setup.
I've been thinking of contributing to HURD lately but idk where to start. Any ideas?
Install Gentoo for starters
Then go to FSF website and there should be plenty of info for you
what the fuck
Newfag, not your HURT setup, Hurd man Hurd, mind the d, hurr.
I contribute a bit to Guix and emacs, i'll start helping with hurd too. Guix has hurd in it's repos btw
Good to know there are people who actually do something useful an contribute instead of shitposting and discussing things they know jack shit about
thx user, here's your (You)
more like Turd
Guix+Hurd is peak performance.
So for any confused, here's the story.
The GNU project started in 1983, and they developed a ton of userland utilities, compiler, etc. Now all they needed was a kernel. In 1990, they started work on a Free Software multiserver microkernel system called Hurd, which used Mach as the microkernel itself.
This project was going well, and its speedy initial development can be seen from quotes from the time.
>I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.
>I can (well, almost) hear you asking yourselves "why?". Hurd will be out in a year (or two, or next month, who knows), and I've already got minix.
-- Linus Torvalds
>But in all honesty, I would suggest that people who want a modern "free" OS look around for a microkernel-based, portable OS, like maybe GNU or something like that.
-- Andrew S. Tanenbaum
Yes, even Linus Torvalds's own initial posts about the start of the Linux kernel project were talking about the success of Hurd.
...but as I'm sure you're aware, Linux was also a success. More so than that, it was a worldwide smash success that exceeded anyone's expectations. A truly one of a kind collaborative project. However, it needed a userland. GNU needed a kernel, and seeing the success and popularity of Linux, they jumped on that and started working together.
Since they now had a serviceable kernel in place, they really didn't need Hurd anymore, so they tossed it away. Nowadays, it's more of a research OS sorta like Plan9.
>Guix
Unironically. is it any good?
Fuck you stallman, stops dancing with commies and do your job.
Does it werk yet?
Unironically, it is the best thing that has ever happened to my computer.
>written by FSF
Instantaneous one-way trip to the trash.
I tried GuixSD once. It's not my cup of tea, but for people who are used to lisp or scheme I can see the appeal. Basically you write your whole system config in a scheme file and you can then deploy that on any computer.
