There's another, perhaps less discussed threat. This change can be a hard blow to the content blocking community. Ad blocking extensions' work is based on using multiple filter lists (subscriptions). You might have heard about EasyList, for example, but there are literally hundreds of other lists maintained by volunteers. The limitations of the new API may effectively prevent content blockers from using several filter lists at once.

Anyways, If Google finds a way to kill ad blocking extensions, I'm switching browsers. I use ad block primarily because of malicious ads running shit on my machine without my consent. Sure it's going to happen one way or another but there is way too much shitty illegitimate ads. What happened to MS is happening to Google but the same with Apple. These large corporations aren't strictly in tech companies anymore, they are multinational, multi-industry, maturing conglomerates. How they plan to grow from their tech roots will be interesting to follow.

Google's assets are trying to spin it like there's nothing to see here. Don't care about their "we are not breaking adblockers, just some adblockers" spin. Don't care about "we are just putting some limits on what adblockers can do, they will still work BS". Their spin is irrelevant. The changes they are making will make it impossible to implement filters like uBlock Origin and only very limited neutered ones are possible.
