It depends on what you mean by alternative.
There are alternatives.
But there are so many sites that it supports, an alternative won't be as good.
The main appeal for me is sticking any link into it and having it just work(tm)

Better at scheduling shitty file sharing hosters. You can micromanage how many downloads get run global/per hoster and set a script to reconnect your router so that download limits get circumvented.
I will never wait in my browser again to get that shitty 50kb/s part3 of 8 file. fuck that noise.
only downside is that you need a browser addon to solve recaptcha captchas and that shit is fishy as fuck.

If you're too poor to afford vpn to torrent, ddl is the only way.
Release sites generally give you like 50 500mb zippyshare links to download what you would with just one .torrent. You can just copypaste all 50 links into jdownloader at once and it'll take care of everything.
