/hsg/ - Home Server General

Home server thread
summerfag edition

NAS is how most people get into this. It’s nice have a /comfy/ home for all your data. Streaming your movies/shows around the house and to friends is good feels. Repurpose an old desktop, buy a SBC, or go with cheap used enterprise gear. Lots of options and theres even a flowchart. Ask.

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a pfsense box and configuring some vlans. Theres always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re godtier already? Setup openstack and report back.

>What software should I run?
install gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin to replace netflix, nextcloud to replace googlel, ampache to replace spotify, the list goes on and on. Look at the awesome selfhosted list and ask.

>Datahoarding ok here?
YES - you are in good company. Shuck those easystores and flash IT mode on your H310. All datahoarding talk welcome.

>Do I need a rack and all that noisey enterprise gear?
No. An old laptop or rpi can be a server if you want.

Have a Dell T420, disk light showing constant activity, no visible program activity indicating anything is going on. Have already done a full reinstall, problem persists. Have also searched on Google, no explanation found.

Anyone here have some insight?

what are some ultra low powered machines for small server I really only need one disk and at least one RAM stick? can be x86 or arm

>ultra low powered
Maybe one of those Banana Pi boards?
I think those even have a tiny case for the board and just one disk

Maybe not 100% on-topic for this thread, but this would be the group of people to ask.

I recently ran a bunch of Cat6A (F/UTP) cable in my house. 6a was probably a bit overkill, but it wasn't that much more expensive than 6, so I just went with it. I'd like to eventually run 10G between my own computer any my home server.
The cable is there, but I haven't added anything to the ends yet.

But I also want to want to set up a small rack mount for my home server and where all the cables come in.
So for a patch panel, is it just a case of getting something like dynamix.co.nz/PP-UK-16 and loading it up with as many of dynamix.co.nz/FP-C6AUGS-01 as I need?
I've never really dealt with anything rack mounted before.

Also, if I want to terminate Cat 6a shielded RJ45 connectors, do I need to use a special crimping tool, or would one that I used for 5e be good enough?

I need at least 8 GB ram that's why I wrote one RAM stick

Ah fuck sorry my bad
You can perhaps get a secondhand or refurbished Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny/Dell Optiplex Micro/HP Elitedesk Mini?
They run on those low TDP CPU's
They're built for office work, but they run fine 24/7

just installed jellyfin to see 90% of my shit is not able to play without transcoding, is there a way to comfortably play my shit via mpv?

cifs mounted samba share?

yes, im tired of going through a file manager everytime i want to watch some chinese cartoons

Anybody know of any good guides to setting up a nextcloud server on a raspberry pi?

What's the plan?

We'll see if he replies.

anyone use or build a lackrack? It's a server rack using the "lack" table from IKEA for like $10 each. I was thinking of making one because steel racks cost crazy money.

pic related whoops.

They're crap, the legs are hollow, so you're relying on 1/4" (6mm) of particle board to hold your 80lbs (~35kg) of precious electronics using only wood screws. I waited and checked craigslist every day and eventually found a full size rack with wheels for $20 plus $50 in gas to go get it. Be patient and diligent is my advice, and you will find the perfect rack for your needs.

Yeah see, look at this thing: nothing's even screwed in, he could have just stacked them without the tables and it would take up less space. This guy literally only bought the tables because other people were buying them.

some servers....

Yep, but I inverted it and added locking trolley wheels, as the other user said the legs are hollow and won't really stand up to much weight.

damnit I figured it was too good to be true. For fuck's sake I'm about to just buy some angle iron and make my own with a mig welder.

Would a home server be a good option to host a website that got me kicked off dreamhost? I have a fast connection and I could easily get a static IP. Didn't anontalk do something like that?

Do you want people knocking at your mom's apartment door?

This hobby truly makes you broke, I'm right there too. Today I'm watching a great deal on the exact right kvm for my setup slip away on ebay because I had to get a junkyard alternator for my car the other day. Let's just pool our pain and wallow around in it.

What about this /hsg/? I I'm looking to move my server out of the Fractal R5 it's currently in.

You're paying too much on both things, unless newegg is a must because buttcoin. ebay has full 42u racks for under $200 with free shipping, dig into the categories I circled in pic.

I don't mind paying extra for new stuff especially since this would be some of the first server stuff I'd be buying. I just want to know if Rosewill is good or am I buying garbage?

rosewill is newegg's house brand

does that make it bad?

well now I feel a little better at least

no it's decent, but if you could get the exact same thing from a different website for half the price you probably should

I've never done it but yeah that looks like it would work. In your situation I'd want the patch panel in a small wall-mounted rack, so I could move the server stack around in the room if needed. That was probably already your plan, I just had the image of all the cables coming out into the top of your rack that's on wheels but it's tied to the wall because of the cables.
