If you're running a website, you can't compress your videos with H265 unless you pay the MPEG consortium royalty fees.

It's why most sites don't use H265, they use H264 which is older and cheaper, or they use open source stuff like VP9, or are looking to move to AV1.

But we don't need a competitor site. We just need regular written media sites.

It's not like encoding VP9 on a massive scale is gonna be cheap either.

I don't see that catching on. Youtube is encoding the video into several different quality levels, and then broadcasts those different encodes to potentially hundreds, or thousands of concurrent users from across the world.

This isn't something you can just set up on a whim.
