a long time ago, renaming a specific image that was posted on /b/ to Jow Forums.hta and opening it, started a script that posted that same source image to /b/ telling others to do the same. skiddie's first skid basically. anyway, the people who did that are probably store managers at walmart or something now, and /b/ is now third-worlders posting instagram images with THIS IS MY SLUT GF POST WHAT U WOULD DO TO HER comments because this website is shit

It was a viral bot that spammed the fuck out of Jow Forums like 10 years ago and is the reason Jow Forums now has captchas. The strip at the bottom of the image that looks like a bunch of noise was javascript code, that banner is a fake I think though. Apparently Microsoft thought it would be wise for HTML+JS to be able to modify the files on your computer. If you were lacking in common sense and actually ran the thing it would infect your computer turning it into a bot that would constantly spam Jow Forums with posts exactly like that one but in different colors. The one most people remember and what that banner is modeled after was the latest revision. It copy pasted a random Jow Forums post and changed it slightly usually introducing a typo and it also copied a random file from the person's computer and uploaded it to the site.
It's actually really clever they used the PNG image format to compress the code and files and if you saved it as a Bitmap you'd uncompress the code and files.

/b/ has always been shit but its absolutely unbrowsable at this point. I'm not even certain humans post there, everything is so formulaic that it gives the impression that its entirely just bots posting shit. /b/ needs a scorched earth policy to recover it at this point. Just outright ban anyone that even utters the word "tribute" or random zipcode threads. Culling them out would take time but eventually the ship would right itself as it became too much of a pain in the ass to cycle a new IP... for what? posting random fucking threads via bot on /b/?
This would take effort and that is beyond Hiro's designs for this site. Its fucking astonishing that the main board for the site is allowed to decay so badly. Most of the old /b/ crowd went to Jow Forums and even that is being run into the fucking dirt with slide threads and spam.
