Because they're significantly more expensive, significantly worse ergonomically, and generally don't provide any greater degree of accuracy for moving a pointer on two axes.

Most people don’t need the precision of a pen and mapping movement can be awkward if your drawing tablet is much smaller than your screen.

Because they're fucking awkward for anything other than drawing.

I just bought a Bamboo Pen wacom tablet a few days ago at a thrift store for $5. I just need to get a pack of replacement nibs.

There are two ways to look at it. It’s better than a mouse in terms of wrist strain, but worse because if your tablet is a decent size you have to hold your arm in the air to select things across the screen.
