Why haven't we moved on yet?
It's good enough.
1440p will remplace it in ~5 years
Higher resolution — worse performance.
That's why I chose Redmi 7 instead of Redmi Note 7. Buy Redmi 7, dear friend.
480p was once good enough, 720p was once good enough, time marches on.
Not enough bandwidth esp. in burgerland
For blind people?
human eye cant see more than 2073600 pixels
Human eyes cap.
Diminishing returns and at some point overkill meaning no returns just bigger number. Also expotential costs for nothing. 1080p works and is established.
90% of screens people use are sub 13inches (phones/tablets/laptop).
Higher resolutions are not needed
It’s not about the pixel count but the image processing.
hidpi/UI scaling is the best proof that 1080p is best. Going above that you are just creating problems just so you can solve it for the sake for it. It's like when memory was limited programs and games were efficient, now they are super bloated since you can sort of get away from it. Now you will have huge amount of pixels with UI scaled and folded over 1000 times effectively achieving what just werks at 1080p.
I don't even have 1080p displays.
My main monitor is 1600x900, second monitor is a 4:3 something.
My ThinkPads Don't have 1080p either.
Resolution is most of the times just a meme
New thinkpads do
Cuz 1080P is still the "premium" experience on laptops since normies still buy 720P 1366*768 laptops and old people say 1080P is too "tiny".
4K is only good to normies on a large TV and only because of 4K Netflix, Youtube and consoles. Lots of normies don't care and buy cheap 1080P TVs like the sub $150 USD 40" 1080P TVs. Those that got on the 4K gravy train are buying 50" 4K TVs for $198 at walmart with a 4 star rating.
4K UltraHD bluray is a meme because players are fucking expensive, PS4 is neutered and doesn't support them, the Xbox ironically is the only decent 4K UltraHD bluray player on the market.
Fucking tablets especially the no name chink ones sold at walmart still on 1280*800 and even 1024*600 in 2019.
1440P will never be mainstream because normies don't see a difference between that and 1080P and TVs jump from 1080P to 4K, the 1440P 2K crowd is dead from buyers remorse.
Sony Z5P was a 4K phone that crashed and burned.
Yes, but unlike them we have several higher resolution alternatives to 1080p now and none of them seem to be able to replace 1080p any time soon.
For people, who primarily consume 1080p (or lower) footage. So most people.
>720p was once good enough
it is still good enough
My 4 year old thinkpad is 1080p.
all my screens, both monitors and tvs, are 4k. it's hard to go back to 1080p now, it looks like shit. it looks like pixels.
1440p is my comfy zone for monitors. Between the issues with 4k and scaling and driving the gaymen I want to play it's where it's at for the middle of the road folk.

Tbh this, average connection speed is like 23mbs download and 15(if that) up for the average American household, split between like 3 people 1080p streaming and playing games watching movies etc gets kinda fucked
Source: share house with parents who stream Netflix and shit and would destroy my connection when we had 20 down 5 up until I started paying for fiber internet

No it's not. A 24-inch monitor has to be at least 2160p (4K) to be retina. I've researched resolution-related optical science and I'll make a Jow Forums thread about it some day.
>using marketing wank to make an argument

You're right that retina is a marketing term, but no one else has came up with a word for the PPD (pixels per degree) at which going any higher would result in no noticeable improvement to most people.
