FVWM doesn't even need to be this ugly. It's got so many features that it could look like fucking anything.
even as an absolute default setup for someone who insists on logging into their server with an X session, these defaults are absurdly bad

Install WindowMaker. It is extremely light (we're talking machines with 16MB RAM), looks pleasant, and very featureful.
It's good software, and it isn't a pain in the ass to configure like FVWM.

Not that user, but am currently running openbox but seriously thinking of switching to windowmaker, does it have multiple desktops change with a hotkey(ie alt+num), other than that how are the mouse menus? Can you do the traditional right click hover over stuff and then let go to select it?
This is very important to me, pls respond.

It is a bit archaic. I use it regularly but I would never recommend it to anyone. It's difficult to use at times and the initial compiling/setup is too complex for most people, and doesn't offer any significant benefits. It is comfy though.
