Xubuntu, but Mint XFCE is better ootb. Xfce is the best DE. Budgie is shit if you want to configure something even as trivial as keyboard shortcuts, GNOME is basically Budgie except 10x heavier, MATE is nothing special, KDE is great software but shit default UI.

i'm very new to all this but after a bit of distro hopping i think i like xubuntu best

Xubuntu or Ubuntu minimal with a tiling wm.
I don't know if the second one is considered a flavor but it's the best way to use Ubuntu.

Recently moved over from vanilla ubuntu (xenial with unity) to lubuntu disco with lxqt. it is so much faster than xfce it's a joke. it feels more complete as well. they've even committed to full wayland support by the next LTS. just as traditional as xfce and the old lxde, but without the weight and inconsistent / broken feeling of gtk.

I think I like Ubuntu MATE best

well yeah should've talked about the desktops
but if you install the desktops all on top of each other it doesn't feel as smooth, so I installed the actual flavors

Kubuntu. I used it for over a year, really love KDE. But lately i switched to debian with KDE, it's literally the same without the pretentious ubuntu bullshit.

Any reason to use xubuntu over mint xfce? It just seems nice with the whisker menu and everything without configuration.

I think this question really just boils down to "What's your favorite DE/WM?"

Personally I like Xfce, but I'm too lazy to install it on Ubuntu, so I just use vanilla Ubuntu with GNOME.

I am not going to use an os that has some silly African name.

That's literally not true anymore, and even when they did do it, it was only if you didn't select level 4 and level 5 updates.

Kubuntu. Havent tried many of the other flavors though.

it already does exist, just like Ubuntu Unity, LXDE, Trinity and all the other obscure DE's. You just have to install Ubuntu Mini ISO and add it yourself or just lazilely apt-get the DE you want after installing full Ubuntu.

Ubuntu flavours are nothing more then Desktop environments and software preselections, there is nothing under the hood different from Lubuntu and Ubuntu

mint is outdated and bloated. Also they get a shit load of money from donations and they still can't get to update their site
