What happens if you cover the hole?
What happens if you cover the hole?
bump
Don't do that, the device poops from there.
That hole is probably used for keeping the pressure stable, so when the temperature rises and the air inside the drive expands, it can exit through the hole. If you cover it up, your drive's life expectancy should decrease.
A quick internet search would have given you your answer.
>howtogeek.com
>What happens if you cover the hole?
It wont be able to breathe.
How would you like it if your holes were covered, bub
STOP SAYING YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT AND TELL ME WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IF YOU DO IT
Can you people even read
be at sea level and cover it and then take it to 8000ft+ and plug it in and see what happens
be the change you want to see
Mustard gas
Or you could just not be a literal child that does things because you were explicitly told not to do them

Looks like I was wrong when I said it was a diaphragm the other day. Whoops.
I just want to know
Are you blind? It was already answered.
it gets sad :(
>what is the purpose of
vs
>what happens
Nice reading comprehension you radiator
Aw. I wanted to see them keep flipping out for a while.
Oh, ok nevermind, it's a headline only reading retard.
Can you fucking read? It says right there on the site
>If the air pressure is too low, then there is not enough lift for the flying head, so the head gets too close to the disk, and there is a risk of head crashes and data loss.
How retarded are you faggot?
Fucking spoonfeeder.
>there is a risk of
So you're telling me you have no idea what happens
Don't listen to these lies OP. That hole is to prevent mustard gas build up. If you cover it up, the pressure will build and your hard drive will explode like a mustard gas grenade!
You get aids
PEE IN IT
NOW
Hard drives have to breathe. Just like humans. Why would you try and choke your hard drive? What did it ever do to you besides faithfully serving up data when you needed it?
Don't be so mean to your hard drive.
>So you're telling me you have no idea what happens
That's not what that sentence means you fucking retard. It just means that it isn't guaranteed to happen but there is a risk of it due to the hole being covered.
it would be very painful.
it starts to stutter for air
Inside the hard disk are millions of microscopic data mites that memorize the things you store on the drive. They run rapidly around the platters causing them to spin. Each mite can remember about 4 KB of information. These mites have to breathe, and the air hole lets them. Cover the hole and the mites will begin to die, which shows up as bad sectors.
Don't worry, they put a screen across the hole to prevent the mites from escaping.
But essentially it never happens, right?
I mean I have plenty drives that have no holes on them so what's up with that
>What happens if you cover the hole?
You're not supposed to do that.
nigga don't do it thats 5 to 10
This might happen:

GOT YOUR BACK, HOLE
Gottem
What if I pump all the air out and fill it to atmospheric pressure with nitrogen? Will my hdd last forever then?
It's a speed hole, makes the drive go faster
Not the same user, but how retarded are you? Just because, for instance, one CPU model has overheating problems doesn't mean every single other CPU also has overheating problems. In the same respect, not all Hard Drives are mechanical replicas of each other. If it "essentially never happened" they wouldn't need to include the warning in the first place.

Did you work at Enron or what? They had a similar idea of what a "risk" is.
Glad to see this still referenced.
