freebsd has the best "performance" of any bsd, but it still sucks compared to linux.
there are innumerable minimalist, lightweight linux distros that fill the portable architecture/embedded appliance niche better than netbsd, and distros like qubes and tailes fill the security niche better than openbsd.
that being said, openbsd has a place in my heart, not for being "secure", but for their clean, readable code.
and dragonfly's HAMMER file system is better than any other.

only real problem is ports get updated not really fast.
you can find self mailing port maintainer to get update or if you know some C C++ it not big deal too.
