Honestly, I spent so much time on Openbox, I became really comfortable with it.
dwm is really weird because of the limited number of patches and the weird way it manages windows/tags. also i find the documentation lacking compared to other wms. dwm is a tiling manager with a floating mode and I guess what I'm looking for is a floating window manager with a tiling mode.

i also have set up dwm that way, it defaults to floating, and i tile shit when I need to, but I don't tile by default...
im pretty much writing my own shit rn and it's actually pretty ok
I'm keeping a history of the changes on git so my changes can be turned into patches later

Try herbst or stump.They aren't *exactly* floating wms but they have comprehensive window snapping when the windows are floating. Not to mention their hybrid tiling implementation is easily the most idiomatic I've seen.

why not set up hotkeys in openbox to tile windows (e.g. super+a for left, super+q for top left etc.)? it's decent enough for most things.

I had this configured for quite a while. It's ok, but this pseudo-tiling really ruins the aesthetics, especially with terminals.
Well, there's a thing to have a tiling window manager which has a floating mode that's just good enough for some dialog boxes and there's another thing to use a proper floating window manager where floating windows actually follow some rules, apart from the fact that you can just move/resize them with the mouse. Try openbox/xfce4 and compare the way they manage windows vs dwm floating mode or i3 floating mode. The same goes for floating window managers; their pseudo-tiling is almost never good, it works, but it feels more like Windows snaping some windows than actual proper tiling. At least, that's how it feels to me.

Custom userChrome.css for Firefox, remove window decorations on certain applications (Firefox, in this case) with AHK and run whatever else over an X server (X410 for performance, VcXsrv for compatibility)
Typically, I only use CLI applications or Firefox so this does the trick for me
