en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiptune I think there's a distinction between the .MODs of yesteryear and the fusion genre chiptunes that dominate today's landscape, or at least what's left of it, but I don't call old chiptunes keygen music for the same reason I hope electronic music isn't dubbed youtube intro music by the hyperzoomers of the future.

This... is... epic!

Yeah dude, I think I first hear it around 2008 or 2009 and all these years later it somehow remains in the minds of all people who pirated Sony Vegas.

beautiful

Can anyone help me find the install music from fitgirls DOOM release?

I call it tracker music, but chiptunes is fine, too. I see keygen music as a chiptune sub-genre (short, looping tracks, not always a real tracker module, but still chippy).

Chiptune usually uses videogame hardware to synthesize music, keygen if I'm correct doesn't use videogame instruments

This.
It makes me unreasonably angry for some reason when people call it keygen music.

Also, I am mildly irritated that the youtube audio encoding makes these songs tens or hundreds of times larger than the original size, while also reducing the quality.

>videogame instruments
Generally there is no such thing. On old 8-bit consoles, they synthesized square/sawtooth/noise waveforms (NES), FM synthesis using a few points to make an approximation of an instrument (Sega), or samples played at various rates (SNES, most of the "keygen music" in this thread).
