any way of getting a working Unity desktop?
only option I see would be installing 16.04 LTS, but support for that stops in July

I loved Unity and I like the Unity skin for Gnome 3. I don't know why they get such hate. Unity was the reason I picked and stuck with Ubuntu.

Yo onions un pablo

Terry used it
so yes

you mean April 2021

Unity is still installable on 18,04 and it's even in the official repositories
sudo apt install ubuntu-unity-desktop

What about Kubuntu?

Yes, but you should have witnessed what I and the other oldfags witnessed when it was released. People went absolutely apeshit and ranted about how shitty it was constantly. It was even worse than the current state of GNOME hate. Shuttleworth probably developed a complex over the publics reaction to Unity.

oh right, just looked it up again
think I'm gonna install 16.04 then
thanks

You can pay $11 to this Pajeet and have Unity on 18.04, if you can't do it yourself:

What happened to Yunit, the attempt to develop a fork of Unity 8?

Wow I'm gonna pay just to put it on piratebay

Why the fuck would anyone ever pay for something that can be done with a single command?

yes, and it is still one of only two feature-complete lignux DEs, the other being kde plasma. it has near-perfect multi-monitor support and hidpi scaling too, while many DEs are still trying to figure that shit out. it was amazing for getting shit done. canonical made the wrong choice ditching it. budgie looks like it could eventually fill unity's niche, but it will probably be another year or two before it's stable enough to do so.

People hated Gnome 3 more than they hated Unity back then. I think that a way higher proportion of Jow Forums used Ubuntu with Gnome 2 when it switched to Unity so it was complained about more.

Unity was pretty garbage honestly. It succeeded in being different enough from Windows but not so alien that normies could use it, but it was still a clunky, unpleasant mess.

>People hated Gnome 3 more than they hated Unity back then.
No,no,no,no. The Amazon and Unity rants back then were downright insane at times.

And its broken as fuck on 18.04.

You can't be ahead of your time when you are shamelessly copying your competition.

18.04 looks exactly the same why would you be stupid enough to go back to unity.

How so? It seemed to work pretty much exactly like in 16.04 when I tried it out for a while.

Amazon shit didn't come until a while after Unity was released IIRC.

>it was based
No, it was slow laggy shit, which is why they killed it.

>teejee

Gnome isn't better
They should make Xfce the standard DE if that's truly their concern

For me windows would flicker and freeze.

I believe it is being maintained by volunteers now.

>unity8.io/
Still maintained

youtu.be/3b12nfOuKUo?t=8

yes, soon enough canonical and microsoft will read your thoughts straight from your brain when you watch the desktop to put more efficient ads

>The purpose of internet explorer is to download Firefox
>the purpose of Linux is to download templeOS

>unity
Never thought a human could be this retarded.

in a VM or on real hardware?

You haven't said anything about the left-placed window buttons yet

I remember using it back on 8.04 when it was called ubuntu netbook remix.

no, this shit unironically made me forget about linux after a week of using it. i installed arch 2 months ago and i regret not using arch as my first distro

The only people who hated unity were spinning cube gnome ricers and KDE kicks.

>Yo onions
jajajajajajajajaja

So Apple invented icons in a raster now?

menus are fucked in some apps, try installing Deluge

isn't cinnamon the most balanced and stable desktop environment?

better than gnome for sure

Slower than gnome

It's exactly the same now though
