This. I'd never use mac shit as my main machine but I bought a refurbished Macbook Pro for $400 and, as a carry around basic machine it's just great to use. Amazing battery, no lag, no fighting Windows bullshit, and the trackpad is the star of the show. Never thought I'd be able to use a laptop without a mouse but dammit if Apple didn't make the best track pad of all time. If they don't have that trackpad ability then iPad-as-a-laptop-replacement is pointless.

I spent $400 on it. If it dies and I get another it's still relative chump change. My company gave me an iPad but it sits unused because it's a pain in the ass to make it useful as more than a glorified iPhone. The iPad OS is a step in the right direction but it's one step out of many more before it's useful. I got the used Macbook Pro for easy xcode, but then found myself carrying it around instead of the Dell POS they gave me because of the better battery, instant on, trackpad, and overall ease of use. Once again, never a replacement for my main machine which is a desktop, but for carrying around it runs circles around anything else. All for a pittance, relatively speaking.
