It was more resource intensive according to old benchmarks and personally I noticed a reduction in RAM usage when switching from Cinnamon 4.0.x to GNOME 3.30 (2.2GB -> 1.6GB out of 16GB).

there should only be one possible method/workflow to accomplish any given task.
this design irritates most people to no end, because it is a fundamentally arrogant "we know better than you" attitude, but this makes gnome an ideal tool for elderly people or children you cant trust with a real computer.
