zen is actually a fairly competent cpu core with traditional smt, combined with the chiplet idea which greatly increased yeilds for all markets, reducing the cost of having to make multiple dies of different sizes. real 8 core chips with 16 threads absolutely beats the fuck out of fake 8 cores. Even with AMDs shitty single core score, if they would have just implemented SMT with thuban, or bulldozer, they would have done so much better so much sooner.

I'm 100% sure we'll be seeing at least 48C TRs. We might even see 64C without all the EPYC lanes to make the best workstation lineup ever. The 3950X already deprecated Intel's entire lineup all the way to HEDT, so these Threadrippers are going to make a new standard for the workstation, one that Intel can never compete in unless they drop down top-of-the-line glued 28 core dies to compete. Intel needs to figure out vertical stacking to at least compete in core counts or they are fucking dead on all CPU fronts.

Right now, they have nothing of worth on the roadmaps, embarrassing problems with their fabs, gluing xbox huge dies, and challenging nuclear reactors with their products. Even their glued together 56-core monstrosities won't compete with 64c TR. Similar power draw for less cores, less SC performance, way less MT performance, less PCIe, a nearly-6k pin socket and those things are BGA only anyway, no one will produce a board for them at all either. Intel will have nothing to compete with a 64c TR until they can develop an MCM strategy, and I don't think that's going to happen for several years.

How many cores until we don't need GPUs? 128 cores / 256 threads must be getting close to where it's better just to software render everything. Some raytraced viewports in 3d modelers are pretty fast even with 4 core and 8 core CPUs 64 and 128 cores would be ridiculous. Then you have zbrush software viewport that is happy to display 50 million polygons only using CPU.

x86 is never going to be ideal for GPGPU workloads. GPUs like the RTX 2080 Ti and Radeon VII have thousands of processing cores as well as a lot of other specialized features that don't exist for x86.

Intel probably will rise again... maybe 3 years from now. Their roadmaps indicate they're due for asspain over the next few years though especially since Zen 3 is going to be a significant jump as well.

Not really, look at blender benchmarks for example. 32 core thread ripper and high end xeons are faster per watt than gpus. Its just that cpus are overpriced in comparison.

Uhhh...no? That's not true at all. I can't find any direct comparisons but everything I can find would indicate that even crazy stuff like the 2990WX is only kinda close to low end Pascal or mid-tier Maxwell GPUs, and draws more power than both. It wouldn't even come close to something like an RTX 2080 for render speed. The only reason to use CPU over GPU for something like Blender is because CPU renders can be higher quality, but then they also typically take even longer than doing a fast render which is what I was comparing to GPUs earlier.
