It's pretty good at compression though I don't know if everything needs to be in that format. I don't remember if its a irfanview plugin or icaros that does it for me, but you can make that show a thumbnail too.

I couldn't care less about seeing the thumbnail. Actually it's better when it shows a thumbnail of that sort so I'll see immediately that it's not in a format I can use without editing it.

They can easily be made to phone home so if you download a naughty pic and open it up you get vanned

if you use firefox you can modify your accept headers from
webp,*/*
to just
*/*
and disable webp support in about:config altogether
