It's good.

Slap profile=gpu-hq in your mpv.conf. Bam, done, that's really all you need to do if you're lazy. If your PC is good enough (referring primarily to the scaling options, everything else is fine and you should use them regardless), copy the configuration under "General settings" from the Arch wiki. The keybindings are easy and take all of 2 minutes to learn, but if you want, there are some frontends with nicer graphical interfaces than the default one MPV uses. Naturally, if you're very autistic, there are an endless number of options you can configure if you really want, or you can just copy some nerd's .conf from the mpv threads.

I want to be able to write a script that strings together subclips of videos and plays them in a loop or side by side at times without reloading when the clips change video source. Is this doable?

Honest question here. In this thread we had a number of good answers and ALL suggestions here are factually better than VLC. Then why is VLC so damn popular?

It just werks. MPC needs codec packs, mpv doesn't have an installer, and I'm sure the others have small issues like that as well. People don't care about autistic quality, they just want to install something and play media.
