VPNs are they worth it?

Ive been looking into this recently but I don't have enough knowledge about computers and networks to be able to make an informed decision. Also the opinions and information Ive come across are very mixed. Some say the vpn provider is storing your info in place of the web sites and all you have is their word that they don't store, share, or sell your info. Others say some vpns are better then others but there doesn't seem to be an agreement on what vpns are trustworthy and which ones aren't. So I was hoping to get some feed back on g to see their opinion about them or reliable sources to get the information about VPNs

No product that is advertised in popular YouTube channels can be good.

I can agree with that to some extent. Do you know of a good source to get the information?

Just use private trackers, nerd

Why won't you find it out by yourself?
It's free, after all.

Sure. Just say how can I find you on Facebook...

FB is a data mining trap I don't trust it.. but here goes nothing how do I find you on Facebook?

pretty much every big vpn is a scam, best solution is to host your own but then you have to deal with the privacy policy of the hosting server.

The thing is i don't really do questionable things online I just don't like the fact that I have no control over people and company's stealing my data and not even tell me then share and sell it I don't understand how this is even legal. is it a NSA op? All I want to do is go online and not be spied on but I don't know enough about computers and networks to keep myself safe.. save me from myself and the data miners. And I wouldn't even know where to began starting my own vpn

There is no reason to use a VPN service, ever.
It's fine if you use VPNs for their originally intended goal (a Virtual Private Network), but using it to "hide your IP" is pointless.
Just use Tor for browsing, and a seedbox for torrenting if you need it.

I use tor sometimes but in order to watch any videos i have to grant certain permissions that negate the privacy that tor offers

Thanks I skimmed through them real quick and there seems to be good info there I'm going to read through it in more detail in a bit thanks for the links

Start with this article digdeeper.neocities.org/ghost/botnet.html

will do thanks

The more I'm reading this the less hopeful I am for the future of the internet. Do we have no right to privacy? Is there really no sure fire way to be safe? This is total authoritarian BS. raiding servers, forcing vpn and isp to track us this is crazy

Google it

I have trust me and the closet thing Ive found to a solution is the links you posted

Yeah shit's fucked up, but is not only the internet, and it doesn't seem like it will change anytime soon, even after all the snowden and assange shit, cambridge analytica, all the password breaches like the yahoo one, it didn't change anything, most people don't really care.

You can't never be fully free from the botnet if you are a normal person with a normal job/life.

I just try to take control of my privacy as much as I can while maintaining functionality.

Why don't people who went to college for programming and are really good at it not just create a fb,twitter,YouTube, google only for people who value privacy in their spare time? surly if they posted their work to boards like this or other more tech specific boards that I probably never heard of they would help create, promote, and monetize it. They could make a killing on it.

they have bitchute and duckduckgo but I'm not sure how secure or private it is but I'm sure its better then YouTube and google

>why dont people just create facebook and twitter for people who value their privacy
because the fundamental design of social media such as those can only be sustained on selling user data.

I think you're right in the current system that is in place that is the only way but surly people who are far more intelligent then myself were to brainstorm they could find a way to monetize. or even have it be more of a public service where they don't try to get rich off it just break even. If I knew how to do this stuff I wouldn't mind providing services like video sharing and search engines for free or make them community projects so you don't waste all of your free time doing it for nothing our window of opportunity is closing on being able to stop big tech, if we don't do something soon our children will be the ones to pay the price for our complacency and submission.

This was becoming tl;dr so I'll try and shorten

>Depends on your threat model
>Depends on whether you trust the particular VPN in comparison with your ISP or any free wifi you're using, your country's data collection policies etc.
>Depends on whether you trust the people who are guiding you towards whether or not to trust the VPN (comparison sites, auditors etc)
>Do your research and come to your own conclusions

Put it this way, I trust mine more than my government or ISP. Based on all the reading up I did, they seem pretty safe, despite being shilled everywhere (you guessed it, Nord) and that's my personal judgement when it comes to the payment processing company people always bring up, partly weighted by my threat model (I don't want to be spied on as a matter of principle, and don't want to pay for a porn pass and end up in a wankers database - but I'm not looking at CP or plotting to take down the government). I wouldn't trust them with my life if I was a terrorist or child abuser.

If your threat is just not wanting to be monitored by your immediate network (public wifi, workplace), a VPN across to your own server might be all you want. If it's more serious you might decide you prefer Tor. Personally I suspect Tor is heavily compromised when it comes to endpoints and also don't like how many sites block them, but it may be all you need if you just want a free service for a bit of casual privacy. OTOH maybe you can go nuts on the onion network - don't think I'd 100% trust anything these days though, it's all about weighing up risks.

I basically just use VPN for torrenting, which is fine. If you want better performance checkout Wireguard.

yeah I don't think I trust the tor network completely either but it has potential if they don't sell out or allow it to become compromised. wonder how long Its going to take to complete it though. I don't do anything crazy on the internet I just hate the thought of my data being stored, shared, and sold without my consent and I am prepared to take any and all measures to minimize the amount collected. I doubt even the best computer gurus can prevent their data from being stolen 100% of the time. Big tech needs to be put in their place and we can't count on our government to protect us hell their in bed with them.

Do I really have to care about protecting my data? I am not a consumer of any social media and I dont depend on my computer in my life. Is it really worse in other countries? I am from a third world country tho

FB steals your data even if you don't have an account and most websites have trackers. but if you don't care that people are making money off tracking your every move and selling your info without even giving any of the money to you then don't worry about it
