Did a degree mean shit for you getting an tech job?

I got employed as a game dev purely due to my portfolio despite having no degree, then I went and made my own game, and released it on Steam
in most cases employers don't give a shit what piece of paper you've got, they only care about what you're capable of

No but it directly dictates salary and how far you can advance.

With no degree you'll never move into management while those with one will.

I got my amazon job through an internship offer I caught in my university career fair

Does it depend on the company and what position you have?
I don't ever want to have a management position, I just want to code.

Only for being noticed, but not because it taught me anything.

can you get a degree after being hired?

I Got a MSc in engineering, specialised in optics (lasers, telescopes, the physics behind them) and I had to take some tech job after graduating in the one year nobody was hiring in my field.

I don't really like it but it's not hard and it pays the bills, maybe I'll go back and get a PhD one day instead

No, because they'd rather pay less to people with no degrees which kind of defeats the purpose of getting into this field.

Pretty specific field.

Not that much actually, I took classes in all kinds of stuff like embedded electronics, image processing, non-linear electromagnetism, machine learning and such.

Nobody does pure optics anymore, you just take the cheapest imaging equipment China is willing to sell and fuck around in python until the image looks like something. Adding just one lens to an objective costs about 100$, 5 times that if it's custom made while Pajeet makes it work for 20$ a week.

no, never. you're doomed a code monkey for life (CMFL)

It's almost the only thing that matters.

I am working with PhDs in Computer Science that don't know why they should not use floats for financial applications and solve database performance issues by creating views from raw SQL code.
On the other hand, best dev I was ever working with finished secondary school and dropped from theological seminary.

High performance quant shit use floats all the time

>financial applications
>High performance quant shit
Sometimes I wonder if people are actively trying to be this retarded.

Only the very first one. Once you gain some experience, no one gives a shit anymore.

>I am working with PhDs in Computer Science that don't know why they should not use floats for financial applications and solve database performance issues by creating views from raw SQL code.
Just why

Attached: 2.jpg (768x624, 157K)

Pretty much yes.
Degree was in Politics. Am now sysadmin with govt dept

no, but the extracurricular involvement i had in university did. programming team, security/ctf team, ieee, robotcs, so on... that kind of stuff and the networking you do while doing so will 100% get you a job

The reason you shouldn't is because of rounding errors.

Depends on your employer.
In corporations they usually have strict rules about degrees and salary and stuff.
However if you work in some startup or software house where boss actually knows his shit they will only care about your actual skill level, not some funny paper. Degree might indicate you are smart, but. it's nothing in comparison to rich portfolio and good interview.

I just got my degree few months ago, yet all this time was working as a team leader/R&D in a gamedev and webdev company.

What about Decimal Floating point numbers?
They were meant for financial.

>PhDs in Computer Science that don't know why they should not use floats for financial applications and solve database performance issues by creating views from raw SQL code

please accept my condolences user

what would an acceptable alternative be then

Getting my degree next semester and I literally have 0 shit to put in my portfolio. I did some research at the uni but that was it. I have no idea how I'll find a job.

I didn't want to spend my life being a codemonkey for a manager, so I majored in finance and got an internship at an investment bank. Job offer is communicated in early august but I've heard that around 85% of the intern class gets an offer.

Pic related is me btw

What game?

the game

FUCK

That shit was always ridiculous to me.

sorry but I won't say, doxxing myself on Jow Forums is the last thing I want to do

ITT: Imaginary things that didn't happen

At the time it was interesting enough. I had previously worked in electronics and wanted to try something different.
It got me into govt and then govt IT

Why do I get the feeling I know you? Where are you from?

Louisiana

I don't know you.

In the third world - no. In the first world no one will even talk to an uneducated nigger

Unless, of course, you are a trap and good at sucking dicks dry

sure

Attached: we.png (1013x237, 15K)

Why is there not more programming in this gatdam programming program?
If I have to draw another diagram I'm gonna hurl.

Wow, this obscure screenshot really proved me wrong.

I don't have to prove you wrong though, I've released a game on steam and if you are insecure enough to not take what I say at face value then that's your problem :)

What has not believing your bullshit validated with no evidence got to do with anyone's insecurity? Stop projecting user, you're embarrassing yourself.

Attached: file.png (449x401, 398K)

How would saying what game could dox you? Your not posting anything that actually proofs its your game.

sorry user, the only person projecting here is you :)
you can get the company name and then if you know what you're doing you can easily get the names of the people working in said company

Attached: we2.png (914x603, 53K)

Your response made no logical sense. The reason you don't want to post the game here is because we will see what a piece of shit it is and make a laughing stock of it; now who's insecure?

Attached: file.png (1600x1150, 2.6M)

the reason I don't want to post it here is because I don't want to be associated with the likes of you, nothing more
and don't worry, my game's doing fine, I've yet to see your game though

It does in the sense that it's a basic requirement but everyone has a degree from some degree mill or another so it means fuck all on its own.

Yes. My course included a lot of group projects and talking about those experiences was invaluable in my interviews. I probably could have learnt all the course material without going to university but I would not have had any past experience (which is essential for employers and arguably more important than technical knowledge).

I never stated that I made one. Are you getting emotional again over your silly little game? /v/ is that way, you fucking manchild.

Attached: file.png (1300x924, 598K)

Which one is you?

Lies. Cases like yours are an absolute minority, most hiring in the business relies heavily on using degrees as a crude way to filter down the candidate pool. In other words, you're full of shit and trolling poor anons with this ridiculous notion of companies not caring about degrees.

don't give up :)

Yes but when I got the degree my boss increased my salary pretty much.

Yes, without I degree people would not even consider me for the stuff I am working on.

Your game must be really shitty when you're too embarrassed to even link it here.

>Cases like yours are an absolute minority
well I only have my own personal story to draw conclusions from and also from a coworker, who finished 10 grades out of 12, and then said "fuck it", programmed like a madman, and is getting hired purely due to his portfolio & work experience, rather than any sort of degree

Correct

I believe in you user, keep trying

you're shifting the goalposts. first you said that he isn't posting it because it doesn't exist, and now that he proved the game exists, you're saying that it's all do to with the quality of the game being bad

Duh, keep up.

don't bother with him

I've yet to see any legitimate evidence of a game being made bar an obscure screenshot of Steam.

Where are we again?

Attached: 1547995816524.png (320x159, 72K)

>I only have two (2) anecdotes to draw frim
>in most cases employers don't
Maybe think a bit harder next time before applying your situation to the entire field.

>I want to dox this guy so bad, holy fuck I will go to any lengths in attempting to rile him up into revealing his identity

No
This is just a lie that people with no people skills tell themselves for why they are unsuccessful.

it could be a thing in my country rather than in the whole world
regardless, you're right, my bad

>Said no-one ever
You're not important enough to dox user, stop getting emotional over your manchild game.

you can do it user, I believe in you!

>lol your game doesn't exist
>lol your game is bad
>lol go back to /v/ you manchild
>lol no one cares about your game
what goalpost is it going to be next?

how old is this website

>Refuses to post any credible evidence about manbaby's game, real or make-believe
Nice dodge there, kiddo.

Attached: file.png (1300x866, 1.39M)

Experience, portfolio and personality is more important.
The problem is that your resume is thrown out before they get to know any of that if the highest level of education on there is high shcool.
