If you are sticking with cinnamon I'd get rid of the bar and all the ugly icons.
Then install something like ranger and use that.
Start using more keybindings.
Add transparencies, rice everything up.
There are guides online.

You could just go i3 like half of the anons here. I personally don't like i3 but to each his own. Did the whole riced i3 setup, it looked great but I hated using it.

Well I don't use transparencies but they can look good if done right. If it's pure looks you are looking for rather than functionality.

It's all about trial and error, and finding what you are comfortable with.
