I recently aquired some vintage audio gear and I've refoamed one of the speakers (which sounds very nice) bit I'm wondering how much I'm missing out on by using a 3.5mm aux jack to RCA adapter to supply the audio from my device. Is a dedicated sound card noticeable with a setup like this?
Also, how to prevent crackling when turning the amplifier's volume knob? Just clean the potentiometer contacts or is there some sort of replacement brush?
for the most part the amplifier is already doing the heavy lifting, if you wanted something different with that kind of gear i’d look into some kind of transport + DAC device (CD player? DAC w/ wireless or internet connectivity? etc.) and for the scratchy dial, open the thing up where you can see the pot and douse it with CRC contact cleaner

Opinions on the AKG K702 ? They are still the best open headphones in the 300 - 400 dollars range ? I want to upgrade my K240 which sound fantastic to me
Or there is another full size full open headphones that are better ?
Brandon Evans
>Eight hundred burger tokens >midrange This is the gayest timeline there is
What's a good full sized headphone for metal and electronic music under 400, other than the 58X? I'm OK with open or closed, but generally prefer the former. It will be used for a little bit of gaming as well, so larger soundstage and good imaging is a nice bonus, but musical listening is the top priority.
DT990 Pro. Fun to listen to and still has wide soundstage with good imaging for a good price.
Jace Smith
Ask /csg/ or /iem/ that kind of shit, we only discuss the big boy headphones here.
Eli Kelly
How would you say it compares to the DT880 600 Ohm? I used that for a few years and I ended up getting rid of it as it was a bit too bright, too thin and dry, and lacked a bit of bass for me. I'm sure the DT990 addresses the bass, but I've heard it's even brighter which would probably kill it for me.

>Budget 100-200$ Best in this range >Source Pc, home use only, i will probably need an amp for anything >30ohm >Type of headphone Over ear >Open or closed Not sure, never used open, just gib one with better/more realistic sound >Comfort level Comfy is better, dont care as long as it dosent push down on top of my head >Sound signature Flat, good all around >Past headphones Pic related Sound Blaster, not that bad for 40$
>Budget 200 - 250 USD >Source PC >Type of headphone Over ear only >Open or closed Never used open, I would mostly use it indoors though so doesn't really matter >Comfort level Don't care about the weight as long as it is comfy >Sound signature Flat, wide frequency range >Past headphones HyperX Cloud Core - pic related
I would use it for gaming and shitty music production, more than that, I have lots of FLAC audio
>muh subjective feefees trump your measurements! I guess you have to say something to justify buy a speshal incel box that cost $300 when you get btfo by a $99 freedom box.
I wouldn't put the atticus in summit-fi. Its certainly not the last thing when it comes to transparency. An awesome fun closed back hifi headphone but Its more of a complementary can as opposed to endgame. You'd have it alongside another flagship.
Jason Brooks
i didnt' make the image friend, i just spread it for the greater good and knowledge
But massdrop don't even make the headphones, Sennheiser, AKG, Hifiman etc. do. Also, you are welcome to try and find a brand of headphone that doesn't have a gay person involved somewhere in the chain, if you wish. Good luck.
Jack Jackson
>not wearing your massdrop headphones while you toy your boipucci wearing nothing but your programming socks lol you cissies are gayer than I am

Good replacement for ATH-AD500X?
Used for csgo and loved how accurate the directional sound was which I assume was related to them being open backed. But willing to consider closed back because it’s awkward when watching porn.
I hate the springy rubber cable on these things too.
Eli Taylor
are you watching porn right next to your sister? Open backs aren't that loud unless you're listening at permanent-hearing levels of damage.

Reminder that /hpg/ has enough money to buy Stax but they REFUSE to because they're so afraid that they might actually be good. It would utterly CRUSH them.
I still remember when the HD600s/DT880s/Q701s were the kings of headphones and everything past that was considered esoteric bullshit you got because you were bored.
Wear Stax and be prepared to cum through your ears

Blame redditors and weebs for turning every purchasing decision into a fanboyesque, tribalist and cancerous affair of tiers lists and completely over the top analysis way beyond what the average person could ever notice themselves.
Gavin Baker
give me the best headphones with the best dark and low end sound. I need to shake my head
Jordan Perez
>people are buying 1000$ Iems who cost 10$ to make.
HD600 kind of still is the king of headphones for some genres
it's really hard to upgrade from.
obviously if you're in to nogbass the planars or closed back dynamics are miles better but good luck finding anything that reproduces singer/songwriter, acoustic and classical better
Blake Bell
You niggas still hatin on dt770?
Nicholas Rogers
ZMF Atticus for mid ass (100-300hz)
TH900 for nigbass (sub 100hz)

No only Stax and other bright nobass audiophool sets.
Well, consider this: HD600 was considered end-game neyutral a few years ago, and way better headphones have shown up ever since. Focal, HiFiMan, Audeze, MrSpeakers, all have developed better headphones (Elear/Elex, HE-500/Ediiton X, LCD series, Ether Flow), and way better top of the line headphones as well. Even the HD800 is not considered at the same level of a LCD4 ot an Utopia nowadays. Elex shits all over Senn's 6 series. Thing is, the sound quality ceiling has gone up significantly, and now what was the older "go-to" setup, now is barely mid-fi.
>way beyond what the average person could ever notice themselves The average person couldn't care less about "audiophile" bullshit to be honest, so you're missing the entire point.
just in case i need an amp, are there any good ones for ~50$ ?
Adrian Fisher
They still are the king of headphones. Headphones hasn't improved since the 90s. The HD600 and ER4 are still the standards for fidelity in the headphone game, everything else is just a particular flavor of sound.
Charles Nelson
Is Z Reviews full of shit?
Ian Mitchell
atticus gets rekt by 20 dollar headphones
more proof that audiophiles are deaf and are poor judges of sound quality
Christopher Price
>The HD600 and ER4 are still the standards for fidelity t. HD600 deluded owner Don't even get me started on distortion levels, the Elex approach the Harmann curve much more closely, while being better constructed and distorting less at any non-deafening volume. HD600 owners will always defend their 2 decade old design.
Ignore that faggot. I don't really watch youtube videos but it's good for impressions about durability and comfort. When it comes to the sound i'd look at measurements first, then subjective impressions
Christopher Gutierrez
The Elex does have lower distortion but the HD600 matches the Harman target better, see Oratory1990's measurements. Also >using sbaf measurements lmao @ ur life
Josiah Young
I'm currently happy with my sennheiser HD-25-1 II. Build like a tank, plenty of 3rd party replacement parts. It will last forever.
The difference in how much more energetic the Elex sounds, and how the singers doesn't feel like they're trying to do ASMR and instead are in the soundstage with the rest of the instruments sold it to me. Also: >if you use my measurements it'll prove my point! come on now
Havent heard the Elex or the LCD4(actually debating trying this one), but from experience I will say the Utopias are the most overrated headphones I've tried. Maybe a hair less thin than the HD800S but with a very small soundstage.
Joshua Powell
His headphone reviews suck. As much as one can say "look at the measurements", there isn't a very reliable way to measure them yet. The slightest offset or lifted pad can fuck up a headphone measurement. This is the only time really you need to look at a large amount of subjective reviews(which Zeos usually ends up being no where near or completely opposite of whatever common theme a certain headphone seems to garner). As well as making sure you have a decent return window if you don't like them.
Adam Rogers
Help me out /hpg/!
I need some temporary headphones, I wouldn't want to spend over a 100 euros ('m in Europe) either. I'd like them to be the ones that go over the ears, as in not putting any pressure on the ear itself but lay around it and also cancel noise.
Is there something decent enough for that? I'm not looking for audiophile stuff, just something that works and won't break after 2 months of usage.
Is 800$ really midrange what the fuck? Why do you guys love snake oil like this?

>Budget Up to $200 USD if it's worth it; I'd prefer to spend around $100 though. >Source PC. Currently using a Turtle Beach DSS in stereo mode as the jacks on my motherboard hiss like crazy. >Type of headphone Over ear. >Open or closed Open. >Comfort level As good as possible, but it doesn't really matter as long as it's not clamping down on my head. >Sound signature Neutral preferred; not against something on the warmer side. >Past headphones Audio Technica M30X (current) Turtle Beach Z11
Not a requirement, but it'd also be nice to have removable ear pads for easy replacement and cleaning. I'd also like a recommendation for a good DAC to replace the Turtle Beach DSS.
Jason Nelson
Me? Right now spinning Castlemania on my C.E.C belt drive cd transport to a Spectral SDR-2000 DAC through the tube output stage of Audio Aero Capitole MK2 into SRM-727ii and SR-009
Has your friend listened to many good headphones before or just beats and razer?
Ian Morales
>Budget 150 dollars >Source PC >Type Over ear >Open or closed closed >Comfort level not very important >Sound signature v-shaped >Past headphones Chinese headphone
Most of the time people just "hear" and don't "listen". Most friends who tried mine liked them as soon as they hit play, one friend asked me the difference, I told him to look for the hi hats, and he understood. Mainly, normies look for bass, so there's that.
Dominic Bell
>Mainly, normies look for bass That killed the budget sennheisers, that retarded bass is retarded.
Jeremiah Lee
The same way cars from the 90's are shit nowadays, so have headphones from that era fallen behind. This is why a HD600 is almost 3 times cheaper than a Elex. However, the law of diminishing returns always apply, so it's not 3 times better (but in no category, the quality of a "thing" scales linearly with its price).
