you had to make a thread because amd named a product something else ?

Everyone knows they changed the name of the line before release to get numbers on the same scale as Nvidia lines. Why are you acting like this is at all significant?

ugly, has the same aesthetics as a knockoff iphone from a dubai market stall

Navi 40 would be better

>it’s ok when AMD does it

Jow Forums in a nutshell.

this

they ditched a name before release, how much you wanna bet Nvidia has ditched names before release before?
work in progress names are completely normal

In other words, this confirms that this was always meant to be high-end Navi.
And the $400-$500 launch price is on par with the R9 290/x launch price.

The Navi refresh in 2020 will be 2080 Ti performance for $250 and destroy Nvidiot

I hate these shitty oh nono threads fuck you you fucking nigger

>*NEW* naming doesn't matter
this one is actually true

>card not even out
>already rebranded
absolute state of rebrandeon technologies group

Sorry, did you want rgb lights on it?

>everyone knows

spotted the zoomer

Maybe they were going to call big navi "navi" 48/56/64.

link to your patreon?

Their flagship dies are usually different

i didn't know that. makes their marketing even more pathetic, can't they do their own thing for once? they have zero identity, always follow nvidia pricing and naming in the last 10 years

that new rdna wont have the big 64 wall anymore if the wavefront is indeed 32 16x2 now it will scale like a 570 to a 580

so first gen RDNA is DOA for desktop either way?

what on earth are you even talking about

The 64 limit was a result of the 4 shader engine configuration. Pretty sure that hasnt changed

paypal.me/lightpp

so AMD two tiers behind Nvidia still? this is sad

GCN isn't fixed if they can't scale it.

that limit was the result of poor geometry and lack of utilization on games

it can scale like a beast in compute but in games its pretty much dead with the current wavefront scale

So why 5700? Why not 5800 or 5900?
It makes no fucking sense.

what you know as rdna now is probably that same design they wanted to bring in 2016 and 2017 and got cucked twice by glofo

because they couldn't fight big nvidia cards, also because RVII exists

What? Were talking about the 64 CU limit on the hardware. They physically couldnt scale GCN past 4096 shader blocks. During the 290x release they said it would require a massive redesign

amd always release a TAM friendly card

tho we might need to wait for the reviews for it cause if the advantage over the 2070 is as amd claims then it means they were literally targeting the super refresh all the time

are you saying vega should've been navi? doesn't add up

>a card in 2020 will beat a card from 2018

What an accomplishment

how do you compete with something that has better name, same performance and same price?

do you think companies just casually designs cards in 1-2 years? go check when amd filed the patent for the primitive engine 3 fucking years before we even heard about vega what so ever

since buttcoin is going up, i noticed radeon vii is hashing at 73MH/s.
i'll wait for navi hashing numbers.

>better name
i guess you are right afterall people care a lot about the name of the product
>same perfomance
gee i dont know
>same price
by same you mean less right?

No. GCN was always stuck on their roadmap for 8(10?) years. Which more or less coincides with the active lifespan of the current gen of consoles. Which is why I believe they specifically didnt move off it because they needed it to transition seamlessly to the half gen consoles like the c14 and ps4 pro. When the visual technologies group or whatever (RTG'a old department name) designed GCN it was a pretty impressive, albeit ill-fated and inappropriate, design with a lot of raw power. There's no reason they couldnt have done significant redesigns, but they specifically said it was here to stay for almost a decade from the start

$30 with better name is not less at all
AMD benchmarks are always leaning towards AMD, it's probably barely 2% above if not below again like with RVII
not to mention the lack of features, say what you will if someone decides to buy 450 GPU they would lean towards the one with more features and RTX is that.

the primary cause was always
1) the really long pipeline which for games doesnt do jack shit
2) the geometry engine
3) the really weird cache topology

all of this was good for compute they could scale gcn to infinity if crunching shit is the sole reason of being
but for games this makes it very VERY complicated because someone will need to specifically write code for the 64 wavefront that cant split up due to the stupid cache design

now that pretty much everything has been solved even the cached is shared between 2 cores each means that the wavefront can be splitted down to x16 without being dependant on what the rest of the cores are doing thus having a much better utilization overall which we go back to the point that rdna sacrifices a lot of its compute perfomance for being a "gaming" card

One more thing. AMD probably pushed their entire pc graphics timeline back by 2 or 3 years. Originally they showed a roadmap to investors with a stacked memory GPU slated for 2012 or so. Obviously that didnt happen until 2015. Either HBM was delayed or they purposefully delayed to align with business clients to save money

nobody buys are msrp we will have to wait
they show something from 12 to 20 or 17 whatever it was which is significant even for games that traditionally are shit on amd
>lack of features

what are you even talking about LOL
if anything they are bringing more shit to up the game on the fidelity of the graphics instead of fucking downscaling the graphics to achieve bigger fps

>all of this was good for compute
which they squandered and gave away market to nvidia for 8 years, now we have cuda domination with almost no wiggle room

nah its well known that the previous ceo made some very odd choices (which considering that he was working at dell and now at intel says a lot..) about the gcn especially the fact that he didnt want to have a geometry engine

>what are you even talking about LOL
the choices to make. RTX looks impressive, isharpen doesn't.

well all things considering some oak labs chose project 47 for the exascale with epyc shit id say its a sign that shit is going to the right direction

at least we will get better tools if anything

>rtx looks amazing
yeah on benchmarks cause nobody really uses it

according to amd fidelity fx has a cost of a single cu of computing power to do its job in real time

it will run on nvidia. it's open source, driver supporting it will come after first game with it.

>it will run on nvidia

the only thing nvidia adopted from amd was freesync
im pretty sure nvidia wont support jack shit considering that it will hamper their perfomance

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. For one Rory should be getting most of the credit Lisa is enjoying. HE HIRED KELLER AND STARTED ZEN (and k12). He also hired Lisa for that matter and clearly groomed her to take over as CEO. He outright said he was only on board for a few years to clean up costs and realign their primary product offerings

And GCN and HBM were on the roadmaps before Rory joined in 2011. Literally ages before. HBM was a project from like 2008 or 2009 lead by Joe Macri. Gcn most likely started at least around 2007 or 2008 as well.

Stop responding to me

nvidia supports all of AMD software tech

Are you retarded? Fidelityfx is a post processing image sharpener. Your cheapo monitor does the same thing.

didn't Lisa hire Keller? nobody ever said Rory did.

you can turn lights off but you can't turn the fake rolex paint job off

it's not. it's a good tech, point is it will work on all hardware.

>gcn was on the roadmaps 7 years before they even think about it

ah yeah im sure sony and microsoft agree with you LOL

CUDA dominated the day it was born. Nvidia literally invented GPGPU with CUDA. Opencl was a really terrible, Apple-made copycat that no one used, that came out a year after CUDA public availability, and drivers from hardware vendors came later.

By the way AMD had awful opencl drivers. Their developer forums were nothing but people complaining about how AMD's opencl compiler was a broken pile of garbage. It was like that for like 8 years. Nvidia and Intel had better and faster support most of the time.

Opencl was a big practical joke for most of its life. And a shitty chinese knock off kind of joke

>your monitor does the same thing

name a single monitor that does PP

ill wait

Report them. It's spam at this point regardless of company.

>ROY DID NOTHING WRONG
reply

clearly some people have issues when he gets all the blame and he deserved it so

What the fuck? Rory Read became CEO in 2011. He hired Lisa on as VP of their business unit, BUSINESS UNIT, as in business, in Jan 2012. He then hired Keller in mid 2012 as VP and chief architect of cores or some shit, a technology/engineering unit as in they design products and immediately started work on new CPUs for the server space, Zen and K12. Lisa wasnt CEO until the end 2014

Rory please go and stay go.

Are you retarded? Gcn gen 1 was in stores a few days into Jan 2012.

gcn was the sole child of amd sony and ms for the fucking consoles

get that into your shitty brain and stop replying idiotic stuff

>mining bitcoin on a gpu

youtube.com/watch?v=SOTFE7sJY-Q

he literally says that he went on amd for low power cpus and k12 only
zen wasnt his how many times do we have to tell that to the people already

man i wish there was more gold and black hardware out there

Are you mentally retarded? This is a roadmap from 2009 with fucking GCN gen 2 on it. 2008 it would have been GCN gen 1 on it minimum. Even 2007 it probably would have been on their map tentatively

Attached: AMD_roadmap_tiran (1).jpg (574x525, 65K)

It's too late. Those engineers at AMD will never get the full credit.

What if Lisa is burning AMD down

Attached: everybody despair.jpg (500x342, 41K)

He was the VP of the entire technology unit you fucking addled brainlet. That means any product, even if he doesnt work on it, has to through him. He wasnt some fucking middle manager or project manager or even a director. If they spun off the CPU engineering group as a subsidiary he would be the equivalent of the CEO or president. Like the equivalent the CEO of Sony IE.

Stay in /v/, kid.

you do understand that HE said that he has nothing to do with zen but he came only to help amd to lower the zen tdp and k12?

how much of a retard can you actually be?

>stay on v kid

>today we are trying to rewrite history because we dont like it

Little kid, claiming that Microsoft and Sony had anything to do with GCN is rewriting history.

The Radeon part of AMD was already burned down long before she showed up. All she is working with is the ashes. Meanwhile on the CPU front she's doing quite well

Attached: 1553794326205.webm (704x396, 115K)

do you even know what plans ati had for VLIW 3 and 4 user or you think it was gcn because they share the same name?

fucking read before you comment do some search idiot

It takes several years to design a new architecture, kid. AMD had GCN on their fucking road maps in 2009, that means work had already started, it had likely been underway right after AMD acquired ATI, meaning VLIW was made EOL by then.
>b-b-but sony and microsoft!
Stay in /v/, kid.

I don't see what's so special about this?

what the fuck happened with GCN? Northern Islands was great and S. Islands was good if a bit power hungry(I had a 7870xt, great card) but every gen after that was awful.
>Sea Islands
>28nm/22nm
>22nm
wew

While talking about ENGINEERING. Which wasnt his primary task, which was to RUN THE BUSINESS OF THE CORE TECHNOLOGIES GROUP. Why do I have to explain to a bunch of fucking underage third world mongoloids that a business needs executives who make key decisions and manage high level plans like what kind of fucking product needs to be made. Engineers are fucking dime a dozen, those eggheads made garbage like bulldozer because of bad direction.

Rory came in and said "we need to get back to our core business, x86 servers. Let's cut costs and use the new budget to hire people to make it happen." So he hires Keller who hires other people and puts together a few engineering teams and draws up business needs. He goes "hey guys, Mike Clark will be leading this project. We need x86 and ARM architectures that need to meet these power targets, costs, performance, scales to x performance or cores, and it should be a traditional architecture that runs optimally on existing software none of that funny bulldozer business. Ok get to it." Then the PMs and engineers work together to hash out what's possible by when, the engineers figure out how exactly to make the shit they've been tasked with making, and in a very rare case the VP is chief architect and will also be working on part of the project directly.

Meanwhile Lisa, also hired by Rory, is going out and meeting other company execs and pitching them on existing and upcoming projects or deals. And she's taking other people with whipping up specific details for deals, promos, business agreements like semi-custom licensing, etx

As the buck gets passed down the chain the responsibility and details become finer grain and works it's way back together to create a whole product with people ready to buy it. But without Rory, without Keller as VP, none that happens and you get good engineers making garbage like bulldozer because they're helpless without goals

You're probably the kind of retards that believes in communism

>literal gcn dies on the roadmap
>I-IT WAS VLIW!

GCN was always relatively good, and still is. Its just that Nvidia made significant advancements and outpaced them.
