>x220 arrives TODAY
I'm so excited to put Mint on it !

wow, being productive just FEELS better on a ThinkPad.. i dont know how else to even describe it

samefag and sage

sent from Anons new X220

Nah not samefag, I'm setting up Mint rn tho

I finally got my first beautiful thinkpad, a t450s.. but I'm welcomed with this at boot, while the seller said there should have been windows 10 preinstalled in the 128 sata ssd.
wat do?

Attached: IMG_22062019_192051_1.jpg (800x1066, 241K)

What's the most aesthetic keyboard? Japanese, Korean, or Russian?

can i put a heavier CPU like a i9-9980HK in a w541?

No

If I have a Windows 10 key can I install LTSC?

install linux

Just got a w541 and Mint freezes about 20 seconds after boot.
Do any other distros work? I don't really want to learn Arch

What thinkpads can take a 8 core cpu?

install parrot instead

what is /tpg/ opinion on x250 is it comfy

I'll give it a shot
>4gb
Jeeze

Goys, reporting in on my X220. I love it so much. It handles Mint beautifully. Next project will be to open it up and install some new thermal paste, but I'm comfy @ 8gb RAM and 128gb SSD

Attached: 1521142159325.jpg (685x566, 54K)

that comes with all the fun toys

also ffs what kind of tiny hd do you have that you even notice OS file system sizes

I'm at the bar using wifi

Where tf is the setting to change Ram frequency in the t480 bios?

Fuck why are genuine 9 cell so expensive. It's like $40-50 for a 9 cell and $20 for a 6 cell.

If it weren't for the hassle of charging both I would've bought 2 6 cells.

What's an older ThinkPad (*50 is about as new as i think i can go) that has the option of a nice, easy-on-the-eyes IPS panel?

Guys I'm about to fucking boogaloo, my thinkpad w541 is literally retarded.
When starting normally it takes a full 2-3 mins of blank screen to show the splash, I get keyboard flash like normal then nothing.
When starting out of windows recovery menu it "bricks" for around 2-3 mins also, nothing will even trigger a startup, no power led, no fan spin nothing.

Sometimes it just works like normal though too.

Fuck nupads

X220/X230 have those. The W520 has an FHD tn panel that is surprisingly pretty damn good if that matters.

I guess it depends on how far you're willing to go. There's also a lot of panel swaps out there for older thinkpads like the 3000x2000 and 2880x1920 IPS displays for the x201 same guy sells 13" FHD IPS displays for the x230.

Attached: 0e9jyti.jpg (4000x6000, 1.55M)

How hard is it to install Coreboot on an X230? I am not very intelligent, just so you know.
Also, if I were to install a classic keyboard, should I do that before or after Corebooting?
Finally, where do people go to buy the IPS screen for it?

>$65 for a genuine Lelnovo battery for my X220

WAKE ME UP

Wow that worked, thanks!

If you're interested in a 13" FHD IPS screen this guy sells a drop in replacement where you literally just detach the top half and plug it in for $190

Look up "xytechxytech" on facebook.

Attached: CEXZttX.jpg (4032x3024, 1.89M)

...and if you dont facebook?

Looked all over that guy's page. Didn't see any links to this screen

Pls help :(

You have to contact him, he had a sheet with all his products with pricing listed, but FB is a mess and I can't find it. I've bought from him using paypal.

Make a fake account with a throw away email? idk he has his email listed in his about section.

Noted. Might try to buy one from him in the future if I ever feel like I need an upgrade. Did you buy the 13" FHD IPS you mentioned? How much did it run you?

if you've got another PC lying about, hook the SSD upto it and check the partitions
if the system had win10 pre-installed you could get the key from the BIOS

tried to turn my old T400 (superceeded by a W520) into NAS but I started angsting about wear on the system so I guess I'm not ready to let it go yet.

Also a question: I have the i7-2720QM CPU on my W520, and part of me wants to go to the i7-2860QM, does that make much of a difference. I know there's also the XM chips but I'm not really trying to overclock here.

Kinda, I bought an i7 X230 with the 13" FHD display from him that was already put together. It was like $500. At the time he didn't sell the top panel separately or at least I didn't see his product list and know about it. Given the chance I would've done it myself to save some cash.

prepare to be underwhelmed with quality barely above a consumer notebook.

the keyboard is nice though, so there's that.

Using it right now with Linux Mint and it's fantastic, Anonymous

that's nice to hear, anonymous

How the shit do other people get 2400MHz out of their ram on a t480? I’m stuck at 1200MHz even with ram that can supposedly do 2400MHz

Just to be sure you know DDR means Double Data Rate right? So if it shows "1200" it's actually running at 2400, unless you mean it shows "600" and it's running at 1200.

>it shows "600" and it's running at 1200.

exactly this

faggot

No you need KMS or some other activator

Hey so this thing is pretty fucked
Where should this cap go? The spine, or the other wire?

When I click my w541 Touchpad it lightly shocks me. Any suggestions?

>computer name has error triangle in device manager because I disabled the touch-screen

What's a way I can refurb my X220's chassis? The paint is chipping, the battery lock is broken, the rubber feet got lost long, long, long ago. I really don't know what to do with it because I love that damn machine but it's just being outclassed by my T420 right now which is wayyyyy less portable than the godlike X220.

Has anyone else experienced these kinds of problems? Tricks to keep the battery locked in place, maybe there's ways that I can fix the paint? I'm in over my head when it comes to DIY refurb so any help or ideas would be awesome

Attached: 1560304112495.jpg (1080x1158, 112K)

if the issues are building up your better off just buying a for parts laptop without case issues and Frankenstein it.

buy a broken X220 with a nice exterior and put your working X220 mobo into it

will I regret it Jow Forums??

Attached: lenovo-laptop-thinkpad-x1-extreme-1.png (1060x596, 540K)

coreboot is pretty easy

just get something like a CH341A and a SOIC 8 clip and flash with flashrom

Probably

How long do the Ultrabay Slim batteries last for? Is it worth getting one?

Attached: 51VrYIbyCIL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg (350x350, 21K)

w-why?

>$1,673.10
do you really need $1.6k worth of machine?

Attached: fag enabler.png (1400x1800, 70K)

ultrabay batteries are a meme, they're drawn from before the normal battery, so they'll wear down in a matter of months. Just get a second hard drive caddy like everyone else.

I paid 1400 for mine, and yeah, I´ll probably last me for 5 to 7 years.

It's your money then, go for it dude. I wish you luck on your computational endeavors

What's the best libre wifi card I could install on a T420s?
Also, what other misc. mods could I make to it? I'm planning on corebooting and switching out the wifi card at the moment. It runs super hot, so I'm going to have to find out what I can do about that.

well fuck

anything interesting I can put in it? I don't need any more storage in my laptop atm

So I bought a pimped out T440P for 300$, did I do good?

Ips display, 500gb ssd, 16gb ram i7 4600m cpu, backlit keyboard.

I'm really enjoying it besides the nu keyboard.
I was gonna buy a cheap one and spec it myself but I think this is cheaper then buying all the components..
I also own a x220

Oh and I forgot to add 9 cell battery...

802.11n - Atheros AR9285
802.11ac - Broadcom BCM4360

So I bought a ultrabay for my t440p, it currently has a 512gb ssd, my question is should I put another ssd in the ultrabay or can I do a 1tb hdd?
I'm planning on putting a linux distro on the ultrabay hdd, currently running win 10 ltsc...

thanks friend, in return, a picture of my t60p, last one with the ibm logo.

meme rig complete

T480 with i5 8250u with slight undervolt, 256GB NVMe + 1TB SSD, 16GB ddr4 at 2400MHz. Put the bigger dGPU cooler on there because I'm an idiot.

Ghetto docks to GTX 1080 eGPU, 75hz freesync ultrawide monitor, logi gaymen mouse, corsair k63 (wired, tried wireless it was a piece of shit), monoprice headphone amp with sennheiser jubilees, and a 20 yr old workhorse of a printer i snagged for $20 from a closing office

i dare you to post a more meme rig

>standing desk

He's going all out

cute and funny

For that price it's very good, yeah. I got mine for around 350$ US with 8GB ram, i5 4300m, no HDD, TN display and no backlit keyboard. This thing feels really solid and well built, so easy to tear down and work on it. Can't wait to fully upgrade it.
Does your keyboard caps color look different from the overall body by any chance? I saw someone in a previous thread mention the backlit keyboards look glossy instead of matte, and get greasy easily, so I'm kind of hesitant on buying one

what in gods name is that?

X201 with custom mobo, io, and display.

Now that is a machine of legend, god damn that keyboard

what's the thinkpad of graphics programming?

This fella says you should be able to put a 4940MX in a T440p. Anyone wanna verify this? Why not a 4980HQ for the Iris Pro GPU? Is it because the L3 cache is bigger on the 4940MX?

God damn, that thing looks beautiful. Sadly way too expensive.

how does one do this? I must know.

Attached: 17353116_102842203588885_712734472929607723_n.jpg (582x580, 56K)

Both fit but the HQ doesn't support video out through the displayport.

4940MX is FCPGA946
4980HQ is FCBGA1364

The CPUs with M are socketed and the CPUs with H are soldered. So no the 4980HQ dosen't fit.

yes but china: item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=561463114198

I know about those adapters, but I the succsess rate is not geat if you do it yourself. Maybe if you buy a already adapted CPU it's better, but still why the hassle, just buy a FCPGA946 CPU. They powerthrottle in a T440p anyway. If you don't need vd-t or 8MB L3 the 4700MQ is probably your best value for money.

I got a 4800MQ in my T440p and I am drunk.

install linux

51 nb(chinks) makes mobos that people can put into their X201 which consist of 8th gen CPU like the i7 8650u, they're ~$600. The 3000x2000 display is a swap from an x1 tablet and requires you to trim the plastic bezel of your x201 to fit. The io was modified to fit stuff such as usb 3.0 and mini display port.

It's a bunch of stuff but there's a dude that sells them already put together with a custom heatsink to cool the i7 8650u

w o a h

is there similar mods for other models? T420 to be specific? Asking for a friend

CloverOS on thinkpads. Yay or nay ?

Solid advice, user. I may end up going with the 4940MX if I can find one for under 250, but probably a 47-4900MQ, since I've found a few of these types under 100 on occasion.

afaik there's only similar mobos for the x61, t60, and x200/201

There's probably display swaps for the t420, but I haven't payed to closely to that model since I generally stick to the X series.

Just use elementary

Take a look at a tool called Throttlestop if you use windows. That's what I use to undervolt my 4800MQ and get depending on the workload 100-200Mhz more out of the powerlimit. If you use Linux i can't help you with undervolting. On a 4700MQ you probably don't even need undervolting to get every last Mhz out of the CPU.

I really don't get the appeal behind the old ThinkPads. I use one every day for work and while it definitely does the job, it's painfully slow in regards to processing power. A dual core at like 2ghz just doesn't cut it, if I put a 1080p video on one monitor and start working in the other it maxes it out easily, slows the OS to a crawl. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

dont use windows

You replace the CPU. Most the purpose of these threads is acquiring a cheap, sturdy house for a stronger CPU, one that may not have all the bells and whistles of a modern device, but will have the computational power needed to do good work on a FOSS system, which can be customized to maximize performance instead of the overwhelming horseshit of something like Windows' desktop environment.

A big part of the appeal is it's dirt cheap.

What model? 2.0 is a pretty low boost.

t440s, with whatever the i7 was at the time. Docked on a standard dock but I can get 2nd monitor output by plugging it into the mini DP on the laptop.

I'd love to not use Windows but you see I'm an adult and need an OS to do work on.

Is a x230 still worth getting in 2019? I have a maxed-out t430 but I'm looking for something more portable to play around with.
