How consistent is Tidal as a service?

Just installed this shy little Cambridge Audio DAC3 behind the monitor to replace my (gasp) internal sound card. Despite only being 16-bit and older than most summerfags, it's got a really nice, low noise floor.

What are those speakers? They look nice and discrete.

Attached: cutebigdac.jpg (2000x1142, 278K)

Also got some basic acoustic treatment installed the other night.

The black box things are the bags that you get at the liquor store, and I got a tonne of them with the house. I thought it was sad, so I decided to turn a symptom of a social ill into something useful by turning them into acoustic treatment. They're full of fiberglass insulation.

The drapes along the wall are just there to diffuse a little so that it's not a plain flat wall there, and they did way more than I thought they would. Thinking about getting a couple of red ones to add some contrast.

A thick wall hanging and a rug would do more.

Yeah, I know. Sadly I can't have a rug since there's always stuff getting wheeled through this room. I'm thinking about getting some thick old blankets to hang on the wall behind the drapes, once I get some better drapes to hang there. I also have a few more liquor store bags to hang.

No, those are entry-level Kharma speakers.
Here are some high-end ones.

thanks - not too expensive for Be drivers

Nice midbass.
JBL has gotten shy about releasing raw drivers to market for whatever reason.

Yeah, they probably didn't like it when people "cloned" their speakers for a much lower price.
Cloned JBL M2 must have been the nail in the coffin, with the speaker being designed with external crossovers and a simple square cabin in MDF made it super easy to "clone".

Excellent compression driver material. A few manufacturers seem to be trying to move away from it to variations of ring radiators. Cost and difficulty of handling beryllium.
I don't see as much value for direct radiators other than the lower mass compared to more conventional materials of aluminium or magnesium.

Hideous.

I know my setup isn't the best, but I really enjoy it. I have another pair of cans, Monoprice Retros, and I use them when I want obnoxious bass. The M50X's are really bassy as well, but they're kind of muddy with a lot of bass, whereas the Retros are not.

literally the Gaymen PC of speakers

Horn compression is still a problem:

Whether or not the JBL will sound as if it has too much high-treble energy will depend on the size of the listener's room and the absorptivity of its furnishings. The broad boost in the mid- and upper bass is due both to the residual room effects and to the generous output in this region. The fact that the in-room balance remains flat above 5kHz, despite the increasing absorptivity of the room furnishings, does mean that the JBL's highs will sound "airy," if not exactly "hot."

are those the Limited Edition ones

Attached: dsc06915__large_full.jpg (1600x1066, 920K)

The quote and horn compression are not related.
Horn loaded compression drivers are strongly resistant to dynamic range compression by nature of the extreme efficiency they offer. The phase plug and exit nozzle are very prone to nonlinearity, and typically exhibit far stronger 2nd order and 3rd order than comparable well-made dome and cone drivers.
JBL M2 has a different problem from the 1400 Array measured in the pic.1400 has a compact compression driver to pull tweeter duty, the M2 does not. The tweeter in the Array may be tuned somewhat hot, and there may be midrange breakup leaking through. Though M2 compression driver is much smaller than the mid unit in the 1400, it still beams in the top octave strongly. This was obvious enough while listening to it, but you can see this very clearly in JBL's own measurement of the M2.

>ow my ears

According to NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, 2011), "workers exposed to particles, fumes, mists and solutions from beryllium-containing materials may develop beryllium sensitization or chronic beryllium disease, a potentially disabling or even fatal respiratory disease."

Depending on how workers are exposed, the diseases can affect different tissues and organs. Breathing in fumes or dusts of beryllium compounds may injure the lungs. While most commonly associated with diseases of the lungs, beryllium may also affect such organs as the liver, kidneys, heart, nervous system, and the lymphatic system.

Direct contact with beryllium fumes or dusts may injure the exposed areas of the body, such as the eyes or the skin. Skin sensitization may also occur.

Beryllium is also a known cancer causing substance, with higher levels of lung cancer being reported. It is classified as a Group 1 - Carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and as an A1 - Confirmed human carcinogen by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH).

Beryllium disease is a notifiable occupational disease in some Canadian jurisdictions (Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador).

What kind of speakers are you looking at?

There's some stuff from PSB, Focal, and Kef that would be in my range. Elac UB5's are on sale right now.
But there's also a local guy that has a few set of Celestion Ditton speakers for sale too.
Willing to spend up to a thousand for the right ones.

Parts express?

Yes they are actually. They were cheaper than the black ones. I like them a lot.

noice
you have a lot of options at 1k

Yeah.

No issues with beryllium drivers for the end user. It is stable so long you don't try to grind or scrape it into dust. Keep fingers away from the domes. Perhaps a little more of concern for "beryllium" drivers that only use a coating?
The toxicity is a concern for the production, though its mechanical properties are more severe a barrier to working the material.

Man of taste

I have my rb-51 ref IV on the desk now.

No. I'm not paying premium for (((MQA))) which is just glorified MP3.

Also consider that is only one measurment, results may vary between measurments due circumstances and methods. It's in overall quite flat to 20Khz, and if you are def above 16Khz like me it doesn't matter much, plus that JBL comes with some level adjustability for the mid-range and tweeter. There's a lot more to the actual sound of the speaker than a single FR-graph.
Haven't heard the M2 but it's very obvious with the 4367. It sounds fine as long as you can see the white fabric cover in the waveguide, but when you get more off-axis than that the tweeter rolls of very fast.

Another pro that comes with horns is the high sensitivity and normally high impedance, putting a lot less stress on the amp.

2x XLR male-male cables.

why are many audiophile speakers so inefficient while entry level ones tend to be very efficient? what do you gain by not caring about the efficiency in your design?

>Electrolytics in signal chain.

Disgusting.

I'd pick Bryston over Krell any day of the week.

>audiophile speakers so inefficient while entry level ones tend to be very efficient
That doesn't always seem to be true. Do elaborate.

One reason could be misleading specs, like entry level Klipsch are way overspeced.
Higher end might have heavier cones for a lower resonance frequency and thus lower sensitivity
Higer end might have a higher order crossover with more compensation further lowering the efficency.

Seems to me like male to female cables are needed there, actually.
