Ubuntu Developer Talks Down Impact Of 32-Bit Changes For Ubuntu 19.10

DAMAGE CONTROL
I REPEAT
DAMAGE CONTROL
>I’m sorry that we’ve given anyone the impression that we are “dropping support for i386 applications”. >That’s simply not the case. What we are dropping is updates to the i386 libraries, which will be frozen at the 18.04 LTS versions. But there is every intention to ensure that there is a clear story for how i386 applications (including games) can be run on versions of Ubuntu later than 19.10.

So basically your going to be playing Russian roulette every time you use 32bit applications in 19.10

In other words, it’s useless.

Why can't they just say "We're sorry, we fucked up"? What is this
>OH NONONO YOU'RE WRONG AND MISUNDERSTOOD US
shit? Fuck ubuntu and fuck canonical.

Valve wouldn't pull out if this wasn't important and they had an internal discussion.

I have never ever played games on Ubuntu. I have used other distro's for gaming. The serious work was done on Ubuntu instead. I have no problem with this. If anything going 64-Bit only will force game dev's to ditch Steam's wine strategy for SteamPlay and make more native 64-Bit games for Linux because of Ubuntu's huge end-user base to gain their linux bucks.

"No linux, no bucks" @ you, Steam.

Or maybe people will move to other distro that does everything.
Modern Ubuntu isn't made for desktop anyway.

Using proprietary programs that can't get with the times and recompile for 64-bit is what is playing russian roulette. How long are you going to hold on to those binaries for? 50 years? 100 years?

>If anything going 64-Bit only will force game dev's to ditch Steam's wine strategy for SteamPlay and make more native 64-Bit games for Linux because of Ubuntu's huge end-user base
Ubuntards still don't understand what's coming, kek.

A bunch of /v/irgin zoomers leaving a find another distro to shit up? Yes, we are looking forward to that.

Why would you use Ubuntu when we have Debian?

This was obvious from the start. I'm disappointed and saddened by the community who have been attacking Canonical under the false assumption that a i386 version of the distro is required to run 32bit legacy software on a 64bit platform.

Hi Canonical, I hope the money m$ gave you was worth it.

>ms gets linux in windows
>ubuntu dropping 32 bit
Seems all too fishy.

I was thinking about that. Imagine you're partners, even if you don't have a contract per se. Suddenly your """partner""" makes an announcement that heavily impacts you without previous communication.
The most logical response is to also release PR without any communication and get rid of that """partnership""". And find someone who actually cares about your billion dollar company.

>be African OS company
>install 32-bit application
>conflicting dependencies
>removes backward compatibility for sake of shiny

>be Neckbeard OS company
>everything just works
>every browser include Fedora as user agent

>proprietary software is forced to do an update if they want their stuff to work in a non LTS release.
Who cares?
Why are they still using 32bit?

100% damage control because previously they basically said you will need to run 32 bit applications in a container with an older version of Ubuntu.

Canonical could announce that you will need to do a CPU context switch to run multiple programs on a single core, and internet shitheads would cry about how Ubuntu is crazy for requiring such a thing.

What’s stopping someone from just dling 32 bit libraries? I thought distros were basically just prepackeged, and anything is moddable. Can’t someone just make a forked version with 32bit support following along? Sorry Linux brainlet.

People pointing at Valve dropping out forget that the past few years Valve has been putting zero effort into several of their ongoing project and that their Steam client still has 32-bit dependencies and an optional dependency on Adobe Flash. It's not a decision on their part that comes from any sort of concern for the consumer, it's a decision that stems from a desire to continue being lazy about their Linux support.

A better company would request developers either update their packages to work on 64-bit natively or repackage the apps as snaps or containers to remain listed as Linux compatible.

>What’s stopping someone from just dling 32 bit libraries?
Literally nothing, and a lot of games already do this to avoid incompatibilities with all the various versions out there.

>Can’t someone just make a forked version with 32bit support following along?
They wouldn't even need to fork. They can just publish a version of Wine that bundles 32bit libraries and everything will just work. Hell, Canonical would probably do that themselves.

>Sorry Linux brainlet.
You're already smarter than most peoplSorry Linux brainlet.e commenting on this announcement.

Another thing added to the list of "freetard problems that W10 chads don't have"

Go away already you GNUTS/Lunatic fucktard.

>windows anything
>chads

>Ubuntu (Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼù])[1][2] is a Nguni Bantu term meaning "humanity". It is often translated as "I am because we are," or "humanity towards others", but is often used in a more philosophical sense to mean "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".

Except if you're a gamer. #RiseUp

Gamers already don't believe in sharing as they all worship nonfree software and junk walled garden app stores like Steam.

>Windows 7 EOL soon
>Ubuntu conveniently shoots itself in the foot

installation takes more time, setting-up everything takes more time, installing nonfree components takes more time, etc.

come play xonotic/rexuiz

>yes this is raj
>yes meestir loonix pls shut down 32 bit now windows no longer need 32 bit uboontoo no longer need 32 bit
>no, I dont care about geee anoons
>just shut it down
>10 billion rooppeee entered into your account thank you meestir loonix

Heh, you got that right, sister! W10 chads? More like W10 chuds! Now pardon me, sister, but I must needs dilate...

theyre making more money than you will ever make in your lifetime or your children if you choose to have any they will make the same amount if not more than before

That’s not actually true though, you can download Debian+nonfree as an ISO, and installation and setup are the same really.

>losing customers and mindshare is good
Hahaha is this a shilljeet?

What a pathetic post, user. Hope you're doing OK.

I fail to see how an OS that downloads candy crush automatically somehow not considered cucked by schizo tranny posters

Maybe Ubuntu fans don't want Ununtu hating trolls anyway. Nyah nyah go to slackware or whatever you are using these days. Probably Microsoft who forget to do Windows 9.

>we're not dropping support
>we're just not going to update them
So literally the same?

Stupid question: Will Mint be affected by that in future releases?

how braindead must you be to use distros like mint, elementary or any that uses an already rotten ubuntu base
its like you hate your computer and yourself
over the years you learn that relying on software that ties itself to more big piles of software is a huge mistake

>If anything going 64-Bit only will force game dev's to ditch Steam's wine strategy for SteamPlay and make more native 64-Bit games for Linux because of Ubuntu's huge end-user base to gain their linux bucks.
imagine actually believing this

Actually I'm using Opensuse Tumbleweed, but still care about Mint, because was my first distro.

Does that mean that I, as a Xubuntu User, should make the switch to Debian Stable + Xfce DE?

Not in the short term as it's based on LTS.
Clem said that he'll look into what to do in the meantime.

you should do whatever the fuck you want, we shitpost a lot here but in the end its your choice
just make sure its as informed as possible

Isn’t this a double edged sword though?
I mean frequently updated libraries may break programs that work previously, although never updating them wont fix previously unknown bugs.

Or maybe i don't know what I'm talking about.

Udindu fags on suicide watch

Will this affect 32 bit windows games on steam that are running using Wine?

Of course it will affect wine. You need multilib enabled to even use wine, because there are 32-bit libs packaged with it. Better start looking for a new distro now.

Stop lying you sack of shit.

Their official solution was literally to run a 18.04 chroot because the i386 package would not exist anymore.

>muh video games
Just use windows holy shit. You can dual boot or use another machine for privacy when you view your furry porn.

>tax software is a video game
Were you born this dumb or did your parents hit you?

I misquoted and can't find the edit button on this forum.

>wine is proprietary

Imagine being afraid to break backward compatibility. Lol.

He could drop ubuntu mint and make LMDE the definitive edition of mint

Lookit all the Debian shills taking advantage of the situation. You're all acting like a bunch of ambulance chasers. It's pathetic.

>make LMDE the definitive edition of mint
No reason to do that when they could just add their own repo for 32bit shit or use already existing repos.

>shills
Ubuntu is downstream from Debian and there's no money involved. People recommending to move a step upstream is only logical, not shilling. The days when Debian was difficult and there was a need for Ubuntu have passed.

Whatever Wine runs, is.

I don't mind saving money by not financially supporting Valve and their Microsoft stealth tax Proton SteamPlay. Ubuntu for me then and native linux games get my bucks.

Damage control 101. NEVER admit that you made mistakes. Avoid the problem as much as possible. Just be silent until the problem goes away, or alternatively, go on the offense and blame your customers.

This is some genuine mental health issues level of delusion. Game developers don't give a fuck about Linux full stop.

>a standardized api is proprietary

> I was just pretending to be retarded

>linux bucks
lol I'm never going to pay for games ever even if they port them directly to linux

So does that mean that future ubuntu will be stuck on ancien 32-bit mesa and new gpus won't work properly 90% of gaymen?
This sounds like hasty damage control more than anything. They had a thread about creating 18.04 chroots for fucks sake.

Attached: 1532200012075.gif (640x480, 1.26M)

*ancient releases of 32-bit mesa
for clarification

this. it isn't some valve power play, it's valve being lazy and everyone bending their will because steam is a big fucking deal.

>Ubuntu: does retarded shit
>Valve: fuck this shit, we're out. It's time to find a better distribution
>Ubuntards: NO NO NO BUT WE'RE ENTITLED TO BEING YOUR TARGET DISTRIBUTION YOU LAZY FAGGOTS WTF
Fucking ubuntards, holy shit.
