How do you securely dispose of your data user?

I have a pile of old HDD's to get rid of, personally I overwrite the data then disassemble the hard drives and smash up platters.

I've seen claims that you can still theoretically read data that has been overwritten but I've never actually seen any hardware or software that can do this (link related)

What do you do with your old disk drives? ever brought something off ebay and recovered anything interesting from the drives?

One word:

Sledgehammer.

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/whatever is enough unless the NSA is in your threat model. if it is then overwrite it from urandom first.

Nowadays I just use full disc encryption for day 1 and wipe it 1-3 times when I replace it. I still have one old HDD that broke before I starting FDEing everything. Prob will just bend/shatter it and recycle it with metal waste.

Don't forget using magnets and putting HDDs in a microwave for 15s each.

Honestly I'm slightly disappointed that no one went full tin foil hat and started talking about their home made industrial strength microwave and how they sand the surface of the disk before and after, then break it apart into 8 different pieces that they put into 8 different bins in 8 different cities...

Someone better post SSDchan now

DBAN Guttman 35.
If I still end up get fucked by someone figuring out how to read my shit I'm not even going to be mad, just impressed.

I hope it makes you happy senpai

Overkill and damaging if you want to repurpose the drive securely.

1 pass is usually fine, but 2-3 total is enough tinfoil. 35 is just stupid, and drives are large these days so enjoy wasting time and energy.

tldr don't use 35 pass

Yeah, that's overkill. I've destroyed several HDDs at work by simply opening them while running and sticking a magnet near the platters.
You can tell when it's finished by restarting the drive. If the arm clicks and drops back uselessly, you've wiped the data and the sector tracking.

Fake and gay, if you have an ssd the firmware litteraly gives a fuck about your dd

I don't

>enjoy wasting time and energy.
I do actually, thanks for your concern.

I've only needed to destroy one drive so far, an SSD which had failed. I took out the board, wrapped it in an old rag, and took a hammer to it. Fun stuff.

well one OP specifically said HDD. Two if you have an SSD you can just use blkdiscard.

The amount of schizos on this board lmao

Why go through all that trouble?

Why not spend the $20,000 and buy a proper drive liquidation unit?

There's mobile cart degaussers, HDD shredders and even incinerators to render them beyond recovery. A cart unit also fits into most labs in case of immediate need of destruction.

Even NSA would struggle to get any useful data from a single write quite honestly.

easiest thing to do is to just put it to a bench grinder

no one gives a shit about your porn collection you paranoid schitzo

At my work, we wipe our drives in compliance with the DoD 5220.22-M sanitation procedure (random, 0x00, 0xff, verify), run them thrice through a high-powered degausser, then physically shred the hard drives to pieces less than 1cm.

If you're paranoid: Chemically dissolving.
If you're not me: Crush the platters.
