santa claus arrived here immediately after the US took us as their possesion, so it's been here long enough to become accepted by everyone, half the population have converted to protestanism, so it has gained mayor acceptance, most catholics are unaware of santa claus' origin
I would argue that santa shouldn't be celebrated among both catholics and protestants, it's not about beliefs, it's just plainly disrespectful to the person behind the myth
don't even get me started about the strange imports from the US that has become part of our traditional way of celebrating christmas (such as associating christmas with santa, snow and reindeers even though there isn't any snow here), overall, modern christmas seems to have become very americanized, and while i don't mind globalization, i think it would be best if more people celebrated holidays in accordance to their culture and their surroundings, the americanization of christmas just makes it feel artificial

we kinda do so as well, i suppose it hasn't been as commercialized here as the US, the problem is that it's only a matter of time before it does, being honest, christmas nowadays is just about buying gifts and then thanking jesus, i don't really think the upcoming generation will just straight up abandon it, but it will inevitably become more centered on the gifts over time while the christian tradition might fade more into obscurity

i just realized you were talking about the celebration of both st. nicholas and santa claus, and in that case, no, we don't really celebrate both, st. nicholas is obscure even among catholics (unless they're diehard catholics, which are probably few)
