Yes, just have your .xinitrc start xterm or something, then launch your window manager from the terminal. Window managers are just applications.

It would only cause issues if it was a DE that would open extra panels/applications. Like I said, window managers are just applications (of which only one can run at once), so treat it like closing/opening any normal app.

It's just the default monospace font. I think most distros come with it. The proper name is DejaVu Sans Mono I think.
