They don't use normal cmos chips, because those things can only detect wavelengths shorter than about 1000nm. Since thermal infrared goes longer than 10 times that, there's no good way of using an electron/ion-based technology of any kind for receiving thermal IR. Be it a silver halide or some sort of semiconductor.
What they use instead is a pyroelectric crystal, which generates an internal electric field proportional to its temperature, which in turn is a factor of the IR radiation incident on it. Measuring this electric field requires some fairly high-impedance circuitry, to ensure that the energy sapped by this circuitry is significantly less than that imparted by the thermal radiation. Standard PIR motion sensors use this mechanism with 2 pixels to detect movement of heat sources (difference with respect to both time and space), where each pixel is perhaps 10mm^2. Since the amount of thermal radiation is proportional to area, a 20mm camera wide element that's 1000px wide will have pixels about 20µm wide, or 0.0004mm^2 in area. That's a factor of 25,000 times smaller, meaning the leakage current will need to be that much smaller too, requiring some fairly specialist electronics, and at perhaps half a million copies crammed into such a tiny area.

The tube is a bronzeish color on the inside.

That's not an AC unit and it won't cool shit. It's just a tiny fan and water. You put it towards your face to get a slightly cooler feeling.

With that even coloration? The heat-treated ones seem to have a bit of a mottled look to them, but these don't look like that at all. Perhaps it was deliberately anodised on the inside for corrosion resistance or something, perhaps by heat and then by electricity?
