I have a retarded noob question. I have a pair of HD6XX headphones and I use an iPod 5.5g as my main listening device. The bass sounds muddy and unclear, but the volume is loud enough. Is this a power/amplification problem, or just the way the headphones sound? I’ve wondered if headphone amps are just a big meme.
If I need an amp, is there a decent portable amp I can get? The Oppo HA2SE looks decent but I’m not sure if it would have enough power to make a difference for the headphones.
The 5th gen ipod videos had bass attenuation issues. What you are describing is a symptom of this. The 6th gen fixed this even though audiophile retards said that the cirus logic tag in the 6th gen is worse than the wolfson in the 5th. Its actually the other way around because of this issue.

Wow, so the 5.5g was actually the meme. I always heard it was the “gold standard” so I happily held onto it and replaced the battery when it wore out. Theoretically, this means a digital line out (through 30-pin) to a DAC/Amp would get around that limitation, right? Do compatible portable dac/amps exist?

D30 is good. I would get JDS Atom or something similar (Massdrop O2, Monoprice Liquid Spark) instead of the A30 amp though. Headphones look at something like HD 6XX or w/e is in your budget.
