16gb ddr3 isn't that expensive anymore and can be found for 60 dollars, unless you really want ecc that is.

Isn't ECC even cheaper if you go for used ones? RAM doesn't really wear down significantly so there's no real reason to not go for used as long as the seller tested it.

They're a tad more expensive here, but if they are cheaper and your sever board supports it, go for it.

You need about 4GB if you arent going to be running virtual servers from it. 4GB should be enough to run everything you want with multiple users and several terminals. You only need enough for whatever software needs to run. On 4GB you could run anything from a game server to a mail server. You can run several kinds of server simultaneously
