how the fuck do you depress a button without pressing it first? like pull it out of the socket?
it should be "push"
Depress is just the first part of a press. You can call it half a press, or a 0.5 press.
YOU CAN'T HAVE HALF AN A PRESS
"de"press means releasing the press.
Note how the light activates once the button is depressed, or released.

who dat?
this but astronomically
fuck off newfag
>Depress is just the first part of a press. You can call it half a press
That would mean pressing a button is only releasing it, which means the opposite of pressing.
no, you see.
"pressing" a button consists of two parts.
one is actually pushing it, and the other is releasing
if you only push a button without releasing it, that's half a press
Its wrong it should be pressed unless that button is facing vertically on a table or desk
Since it appears to be a wall it should be press.
Oh sure, and a push"up" requires a down part.
wrong, pic means you push it so it is released and stays "depressed", sticking out, and then you press it back after 5 seconds,
essentially 2 presses and half
> 2a : to press down
depress a typewriter key
b : to cause to sink to a lower position
No depress involves something moving down...since its on a wall, it doesnt move down.
Therefore you do not depress it, but rather press the button.
see
I would say pressing is only the first part while depressing is second. We say "press the button" because you cant press without depressing unless you just stand there pushing. Both parts would be called "using the button".
You go behind the wall and depress the button so it pushes outward, away from the wall, so depressing it only requires one press.
Of course, from your perspective on the other side of the wall you're pressing it.
Well, pushing then pulling the button, but I think you've got the general synopsis.
Depressing means letting off the button. Took me reading a million guides on driving manual (as the clutch is referred as pressed or depressed) when I was still learning to figure it out.
>not actually looking things up
Seriously, depress involves downward motion...since its on a wall, the button does not move downward.
2a: to press down
--depress a typewriter key
b : to cause to sink to a lower position
>depress a typewriter key
What if you mount the typewriter vertically on a wall?
depress = force something down
press = apply linear force
a small difference, but "press" doesn't specify the direction, so it's typically used for buttons, since they don't necessarily need to be moved down to use
>de- is used for negation or reversal
>press is used for applying inward force
>depress means the exact same thing as press
English is fucking retarded.
Agree, dictionaries are illogical on this one.
Meanwhile... Is it flammable or inflammable?
*ahem*
flame RETARDant
You tell him your life story.
You depress the button inwards for 5 seconds then undepress it to release.
>tfw everything in my life must be depressed to function
How do you call a stupid formicid?
RetardAnt!
famous or infamous?
Yeah, but what do you think what “depression” means?
poor button
According to this guy:
It's the opposite half of a "pression"
>opposite half of a "pression"
lol opposite half of a "pression"
Pressing and releasing are two different actions you idiots.
/thread
In this case, de- means to lower, not undo.
Like depression meaning lowered part.
depress means to press down, not un-press.
compare with express meaning to press out, e.g., press your emotions out.
Buttons should be SMASHED!
>Pressing
There's no such thing.
You depress a button, then undepress it when you pull your finger away.
You push the button to depress it.
Fucking idiot learn to english.
So you break down the wall so it lies flat on the floor, depress the button for 5 seconds, flip the wall over so you can express the button back to its original position, only to realize you're now depressing it again, but from behind.
>You push the button to depress it.
Not! That's how you inpress the button.
Easy. You enter the room with the button already pressed, then you depress it when you need it. That way you only did 0.5 presses.
The button is not impressed.
inpress, not impress
Press for 5 seconds and then release?
RIP in peace 3D touch
No, push, release for 5 seconds, then push and release.
Buttons can be depressed, impressed, but can they be repressed?
>ITT
So how does one impress a button?
>So how does one impress a button?
By lifting something really heavy or pulling off some cool dance moves.
Height, face, frame.
expressed? compressed?
fun things stay in reddit, only depressing things here
by order of lord reddit
how the fuck you push a button without releasing it next
unless your going to die of starvation but still gripping it.
>push button
>press button
Which is correcter?
its already pressed, you need to pull it for 5 seconds
You're a shitty button. kys
Just so you get a little bit smarter from this thread, depress is actually a synonym of press, at least in this context
>Depress for 5 seconds
"Bitch, you do realize your soul purpose in life is to cut off current? Know your place you piece of plastic trash. I will push you so goddamn hard you will start puking sparkles."
