"safe"? The owner has sold user info for past things he's been involved in so there's that. I doubt he'd stop doing that for DDG. Use a metasearch engine instead.

This, some supposed thrustworthy guys trust it, like the tor browser project. Also, the algorithm don't profile it's users, so thinking from a business point they have less reason to keep data, which makes them less likely to sell it. Some of the code is open source, but I can't say I tried to audit any of it. Wouldn't trust my privacy to it, but it's generally better than google to find porn and warez.

I tried using it but it sucked for normal searches. Shame because google biases anything politically.

It's even simpler than that.
It's like searching couple vs white couple on Google. When it's just a white couple it's nothing out of the ordinary. So where those terms appear is when there's something out of the ordinary. That is interracial or they're contrasted in some manner. So for instance now on google you get some white couple who pretends to be black. It's obviously not the most general for 'white couple' in the abstract. Just searching couples yields primarily stock photos of Caucasians hugging or similar with a few Asians sprinkled in there.

How is this a smoking gun? I don't give a fuck about the political position the makers of my search engine have. That's a stupid reason to not use something. Show me some proof that they're not privacy-oriented then maybe I'll stop using them. Even then I doubt it since their results are so much better than google's.
