Run time complexity, data structures, and some super basic algorithms to ensure you're not retarded. That's all it takes. The rest is your projects and social circle.

i actually like algorithms but i have no commercial experience nor any large projects so i will never be even invited for whiteboard interview. I started programming 4 or 5 years ago and i am still shit at it. Just kill me already, end my suffering

don't apply to meme startups and big name tech companies and no one will ever never ever in your whole life ask for gayn*gger leetcode questions

Basically this. They're a retard litmus test. They test if your body is warm.

Just do your own side projects and accept that your code will suck for a while. Eventually something clicks and you start understanding how to approach certain problems.

Thats not enough, if you don't have internships + gihub and personal projects on top of that then forget it.

Theres basically 2 types of people. Those that are smart and can just make up algorithms and code on the fly using general well known algorithms. And those that need to rely on libraries and knowledge of the language to work.

You can't become the first, you either are smart and talented or you're not. You can however become the second type with enough work. And the second type is just as important.

You also have people who are both. But you're clearly too stupid to be that.

Yeah but how do I buy food and shelter without a job?

There's so much bullshit here.

i just got a job because i wrote a fun script that lets you steal wifi and knew how to network with people and appear like i have my shit together.

There's a reason the "$300k starting any job I want" meme is a thing.

Even nigger tier tech companies have incorporated these types of questions into their interviews, they gotta flex that they're as prestigious a company to work for as Fagbook and Gaygle when they obviously can't match their bloated salary levels.

>implying ground is not someone else's ground

It is that simple, but those three seemingly narrow topics are a lot deeper than you understand, so if you do try the cheap and dirty method you are always going to have to accept the fact that any decent interviewer is going to find one of the (many) holes in your knowledge and view you as a fraud. Which, word getting around very quickly in desirable tech companies, means your long term chances of gainful employment are slim to none.
>tldr: go get a degree

>get tech job out of coding boot camp and pure charisma
>hit ceiling after 4 years
>imposter syndrome
>go back to school and get degree
>still feel imposter syndrome
>currently applying to graduate school
fuck my life I'll never be good enough

Are all of these "WAAAAH I CANT GET A GOOD PROGRAMMING JOB" posts made by the same person, every single day? This same exact thread was posted yesterday, along with another programming job post

>get a job with charisma
>imposter
Literally backwards my dude. Imposter syndrome is not real if you're confident enough to land a job and keep it.

Some combination of the endless "everyone should code," memetic corporate fuckery plus the iron clad law of nature that states most humans are too dumb to do anything more than dig holes and stack paperwork. Alternatively, ungrateful crabs who think their two months experience with Node makes them eligible for a high six figure job in the Bay and don't want to pay their dues working for some unknown bolt hole making ends meet.

why do you have imposter syndrome? are you a redditor? programming is trivial

It's honestly not that hard to get a programming job though, even if you're a karlie kloss code bootcamp lentil lad who learned how to code from their iPad, as long as you have a good GitHub with useful programs and pull requests and things that show you can contribute to other people's code, that already puts you ahead of most spergs who expect the interviewer to just hand them a job without even seeing if they know how to do Hello World.
Then, they come on here and complain when the interviewer asks them to do a whiteboard problem instead.

Most companies don't take priority on your github. Or if they do, they also verify that you're legit with a whiteboard. Either way, fags here complaining about a whiteboard deserve to be lumped in with pajeets.

GitHub was actually the one thing my company checked for above all, and whiteboard questions are reserved for people with more bare GitHubs. It varies with every company though, obviously

With CV, of course lol, but that's a given

I know Amazon *may* look at your resume, depending on the hiring manager. Only reason I know this is because I know a senior (basically my aunt's neighbor's son) there and he explicitly told me that github was important. Some other companies won't even look at it because you can't objectively rank it. Google may look at credible achievements. (I think there's some story of someone who was interviewed for a position with Google because they made this amazing tool on mac but then flunked the whiteboard exam). It does depend, definitely. No reason not to pass up good github experience. Put your shit on github, even if it's bad. Showing growth and diversity in what you're learning is great.

>implying you put in any effort to find your own ground

Yep, there was another programming job thread on here yesterday and some user was whining that companies weren't accepting him because he didn't have a facebook, then later revealed he doesn't even have a GitHub or personal website/portfolio and was expecting interviewers to just give him a job and see how he does. Honestly, I'm probably just gonna add "work" and "job" to my filter on Jow Forums from now on, it seems these threads pop up daily.

to everybody trying to find a job: keep going. A few months ago I was extremely miserable and crying daily. I was finally employed a short while ago. We'll all make it, but you have to keep at it.

This is the life we chose user. If you don't grind on leetcode you better know a CEO or have daddy get you a job.

Did he complain about whiteboards too? Lots of people here whine about not getting work even though they put in zero effort. I know it's hard to break into the industry, even as a fresh graduate, but some people here can do a little bit better. I literally had one guy here apply at my company and I find out he failed to reverse a linked list and print its contents. Like Jesus fucking Christ, how do you do that with a comp sci degree?

Nope, but I can only infer that it's the same people who complain about the interview process that also complain about not being able to get a programming job. There's a lot of bullshit in looking for programming work but the interview process is like that for a reason.

>end watching X show
>life is meaningless once again
t-thanks...

>he failed to reverse a linked list and print its contents
I can barely wrap my head around what a linked list is. Should I drop out?

>Should I drop out?
Yes, drop out and get a job in the industry. Knowing what linked lists are is good knowledge to have but not critical (this sentence alone will make CS fags seethe).
I'm likely earning way above what most people on this board do and I didn't even go to college. In the real world, being adaptable and being able to learn fast are more valuable than possessing any particular knowledge.

Reminder that companies hiring you without seeing if you know how to program is literally a neutral-at-best negative-at-worst scenario for them, and companies don't like those. The only person who ends up seething when they pass up your amazing programming skills is you

If he can't dedicate himself to learn what a linkedlist is, he's not going to get past those whiteboards. Again, they're to make sure the body is warm. If he can't sit down and figure this out, very few employers will throw money at him to do work. It's an exercise whether or not you can commit to a goal and accomplish it. If you can't sit down for a few months and get good at these questions, it either means you're lazy or retarded. And an employer wants neither.

>look mom I made the same thread again!
kill yourself OP, you lazy sack of shit

>he can't dedicate himself to learn what a linkedlist is
He never said he dedicated himself to it. He probably doesn't care about to do that, because it's not particularly useful knowledge. I'm sure if really needed to, he could spend an afternoon figuring it out.
>If he can't sit down and figure this out, very few employers will throw money at him to do work
Simply not true. There's plenty of employers out there that don't really care whether you know CS trivia. Although, I think what you mean is that people *should* be able to grasp this stuff if they apply themselves. If that's what you mean then I agree.
>whether or not you can commit to a goal and accomplish it
This is a useful skill, but there are other avenues to prove it.

Doing the easy ones should really be all you need for an entry level position, I would think.

He literally said he can't. That either means he's lazy (can't be arsed to try) or incompetent.

>Simply not true. There's plenty of employers out there that don't really care whether you know CS trivia.
Pretty much any company that isn't some startup or irrelevant shitter will care. Basically any big name company is going to give you these questions. Unless you want to work at some irrelevant small company or accounting firm. All the serious software engineers study for this shit and go to places where they don't feel like they're dumbing themselves down every second while the koders go to Sprint and do the needful.

>This is a useful skill, but there are other avenues to prove it.
Probably there are, but this is the best avenue employers have right now. What can they expect new software engineer grads to know when they come out of college? Can they expect them to know React? No. Spring Boot? No. Any other library or framework? No. Data Structures & Algorithms? Yes.

I think the reason we see so many of these threads now is because Jow Forums "grew up". Jow Forums used to be filled with 15 year old Windows Vista users posting their desktops every day and making fun of each other. These same users (or at least the people like this) ended up growing up and aiming for jobs in computers. Some decided to dedicate their time to learning how to program since they were 15, and others went to college to get a CS degree because they thought people would pay them to do what they did when they were 15, and others ended up being neets.
The people who learned to program (and maybe went to get a CS degree) are now finding their way into the workforce, eventually, and the CS anons saw the programming anons getting jobs and are now trying to scramble to learn programming and are shocked when companies don't want someone without a GitHub/CV/blog.
Just some observations. This might be wildly wrong, it may be accurate. Maybe this user keeps on posting the same thread because it gets speculative bitches like me to post shit like this.

Oh yeah and the neets moved on to posting screen/neofetch riced arch threads and making fun of each other.

Homebrew creator Max Howell

Oh yeah, and the 15 year olds of today are posting Apple vs. Android and Intel vs. AMD and NVidia vs AMD threads

>Pretty much any company that isn't some startup or irrelevant shitter will care.
Your view of the industry is severely warped. It's like watching studio porn and thinking that's what sex is like. Google, Amazon, Facebook are the top 0.1% of all companies. The tip of the iceberg. If you want to work yourself to death just to get in there, go ahead, but the other 99.9% of us are happy in the so called "irrelevant" companies.

shut up and do it, that's how i got my 400k job, i was making 200k before

cringe

Or go into cybersec and manage compliance for 6 figures. Literally point at at the netadmin sysadmin teams "this is bad, this is good, do this, don't do that" 6 FIGURES for this shit and I'm 26, so fucking dumb.

cringe

Zillow, Uber, Lyft, Soundcloud, Twitter, Starbucks, LinkedIn, et cetera. We can keep going down the list and find companies other than the top 5 that do these tests.

That's still in the 99%. How many times a day do you estimate you use the software of "irrelevant" companies? I guarantee you'll underestimate.

Attached: 1530128747173.jpg (345x370, 35K)

I'm only making 200k after I did those tests and got into one of the fancy companies, how do I make 400k

>how do I make 400k
be good and get promoted, l3 doesn't pay that much

If its a "grind" to you and you dont enjoy it, you arent cut out for the job anyways.

None of my job applications had any leetcode. It was just basic whiteboarding questions and behavioral answers. I was also realistic with my expectations that I probably wont start at top tech company with no work experience.

My dilemma now is that im doing basic programming and database work at a nontech company. My work is easy and not stressful and I set my own deadlines most of the time since my managers are so out of the loop of technology. The only thing I worry about is my how employable I will be in the future since I feel like im doing "simple" work.

I dunno, is it better to work my ass off all day to hope I can jump ship to a higher paying job or just stay content doing remedial software tasks for a few hours and then dick around for the rest of the day sipping free coffee.

user dont let the name make you think its more complicated than it is. Its literally just a sequence of data where each piece of data contains a pointer to the next in the list.

don't worry, they will see the X years of experience you in field Y and they will easily hire you. The challenge is for you to keep learning and not get rusty while doing your current easy job.

And you'll use just about none of it, and when you do, you'll have ample time to look it up, implement it, etc.

Pretty much the most advanced thing I've done is variants of BFS/DFS. Not much more. Never done any projects and anyone who suggests it is a retard. Unless your project generates money I can guarantee you I don't really care when interviewing, because it's not a substitute for actual experience.
