Good IPS is great and all but I would like to see more VA
People where ok taking the motion handling hit if it meant going from TN to IPS, I’m willing to do the same going from IPS to VA since VA at this point is only slightly behind IPS
but of course everyone’s got it in their head that IPS is the only thing that’s good and a monitor wouldn’t sell as well if they couldn’t call it an IPS panel even if the VA was great

Nicholas Ramirez
Nicholas Ramirez

but I would like to see more VA
I wouldn't.
Every first monitor is VA nowadays and it fucking sucks for viewing angles.
I'd like that ultrawide Samsung monitor that is 2 27" next to each other with Freesync2, but it's a good damned VA.

Only IPS in that class is LG, but it's inferior when it comes to input ports and almost everything besides the panel itself.

Samsung developed VA panels with a coating to greatly improve viewing angles
It’s only on their TVs sadly and it knocks the contrast down from like 6000:1 to 3000:1 but that is still on par with your standard VA monitors
I think if people were not so invested in having IPS we could see some real interesting panels come out

Henry Wilson
Henry Wilson

va doesn’t have issues with color shift like you see on a TN, it’s gamma shift instead which isn’t nearly as much as a nuisance as actual color shift

Easton Sanchez
Easton Sanchez

Samsung developed VA panels with a coating to greatly improve viewing angles
Yep. According to Wikipedia, it brings all the other parameters (read, positives over IPS) to the levels nearing IPS.
At that point, is there any reason to not just use IPS?
We could see
I wouldn't gamble on that.
Maybe next step is MicroLED, but for now IPS is the best for monitors.
Perhaps not ideal for the hardest corest of gamers, but for me it's like buying a console when I can get a PC, which would also allow me to do tons of other useful shit besides gaming.

It's problems are not problems
Why compromise at all?
Only problem of IPS is light bleed at corners, but that varies from panel to panel and with big screens you don't really look in the corners in the first place.

Most companies who sell monitors don't make their own LCD panels
Asus, Dell, Acer and many others don't have any factories that produce the actual LCD panels instead they just buy then from people who do make panels like LG, Samsung, InnoLux, AU Optronics, etc
They then just assemble the monitors with whatever features and hardware they want and sell them

If they are telling you that it's officially only 100hz then they fucked up somewhere when making them
Monitors are not CPUs there is no "OCing" to a certain refresh rate, it's either the display controller can handle it or it cannot there is no maybe, many display controllers can handle some extra vertical refresh but often it's not enough to let's say make a 60hz display a 75hz display which is the next standard refresh rate you find in a monitor
They are only saying 100hz to cover there ass because they are probably shipping multiple revisions or versions of the same monitor and they're not quite fucking sure that you'll get one that does 120hz

no. asus has a 200hz VA with 1440 ultrawide and local dimming. the dimming looks retarded on desktop and flat interface games but for movie games in bumps the contrast even past the 3000:1 you already get with VA. it also has support for 2 hrd modes.

Hey OP thought I'd chime in without being a fucking retard.

I got this monitor maybe a year ago and it's great. Sure it's alienware but it's not horribly gaudy, from the front it's entirely tame and from the back it's not an eye sore/is relatively tame when compared to other similar ultrawide monitors (asus, acer, etc with their own EPIC GAMER looks).

Also Dell customer service is pretty damn good, first monitor had a dead pixel unfortunately and after sending them a picture of it they shipped me out a new monitor and asked for the old one back in the same box, shipping paid for and everything. Was pretty smooth overall.

It even frequently goes on sale/has discounts, I'm not even talking about refurbished or otherwise second hand monitors, I got mine new for ~700-800.

Ultrawide is only useful when you absolutely need the desktop space of 2 monitors without a bezel

Other than that, the curve is distracting, the gayming "immersion" experience is grossly overexaggerated, you lose fps because you now have to drive those meme pixels, and it's almost guaranteed to be a shit panel if you spend less than $750 on one that's 1440p

If they are telling you that it's officially only 100hz then they fucked up somewhere when making them
Monitor OC is standard for many gsync panels so it's literally a feature vetted by nvidia themselves. The bottleneck for the 100hz guaranteed and 120hz oc is apprantly because the gsync module is limited by DP1.2's bandwidth. 100hz at 3440x1440 saturates 99% of the total bandwidth.

because it costs more and sometimes comes with a custom controller board by nvidia. in reality it's more expensive because those monitors are better, they test a bunch of monitors at nvidia and those that pass validation get to be called gsync. you could get an equivalent monitor for less with freesync, it just might not have as many features or is bad in some small way, or it's modes aren't stable.

My suggestion is based on my experience with horizontal monitors, but make sure the screens aren't so large that you need to move your eyes too much to move from one corner to another. Even worse, if you have to move your head, that is going to get old fast and cause you to use just two out of the tree monitors. Just look at a blank area on the wall to see how old this gets.

I'm looking for a job setup like yours, would you mind sharing these details? That would be incredibly helpful for me.

I don't have any problems with gaming on mine, but i'm not playing any super autistic meme games (pubg csgo and the "competitive" lot), just BF4, RL and SP games.
Note that I only haven't upgraded this to something better is because it still works ok and I got a free upgrade from dell near the end of my warranty (I have bought an U3415 when it came out).
If you want a nice panel and have money to burn, go for it, but if you want a higher refresh rate and adaptive sync support, look for alternatives, I'm pretty sure there are some, and probably for less money even.
