I use tutanota. They have a decent desktop client and phone app. And they seem to care more about FOSS than protonmail, afaik the protonmail app is still proprietary

Yeah, for your e-mail to be seen as legitimate by recipients you must do some shit. But with rspamd now it's simple to set up DKIM signing working and the rest involves adding a couple TXT records to your DNS. You also need to set up reverse DNS lookups, but normally VPS providers let you do this easily. It was fun for me but it took some time since I didn't know anything, but it's possible. The second and third time I had to do it it was already second nature.

Tutanota is fully open source, protonmail isn't. Protonmail has stronger encryption, however Tutanota claimed that they'll be upgrading their encryption this year to that standard. But Tuta's current encryption is still considered secure by security experts. After learning that info I switched to Tutanota. Also, they have a nice app and desktop client.
