Literally all non-HEDT Strix boards other than AMD X370 and X470 boards are garbage in terms of VRMs. X570 is not too bad but the lower end boards also have the same VRMs.

For Asus+Intel only the true ROG boards have decent VRMs, with the exception of Z390 E/F and HEDT boards.

Here. I kinda regret the MB, as I have fallen for the Asus meme. It got plenty of features, but pretty much all the Asus software is garbage and it's ranked pretty low on the AM4 overclocking chart that is thrown around here. Highest I got with PBO was 3,92, but I never really did a long time stress test.

Yeeeah you don't necessarily need a full platform upgrade at this point, but for your GPU you really should look for a second hand FX-8300/8320/8350. At the very very least, get 6300 and OC it or 6350

If you're gayming, you really should get a Zen 2 (unless you wait for 3) for this GPU. For how good Zen was compared to Bulldozer, it still was pretty shit in single thread so I wouldn't be surprised if it bottlenecks a R VII.

the r7 is bottlenecked by my 2700x. it takes a fast intel chip to overcome amds shitty dx11 driver. pair a ryzen or zen+ cpu with an nvidia card. i haven't tested the 7 in my newer 3600 build yet but the dx11 driver will still probably hold it back.

the project cars 2 and world of tanks results are more in line with my experience but other games do a bit better. his creed odyssey results are skewed because using the default very high preset sets volumetric clouds to very high, which tanks performance resulting in the test becoming gpu limited. setting clouds to high my 1080ti can keep to 1440/60 for the most part, using a r vii the minimums are significantly worse (tested at 1080p).

Drivers are from 2015 or so. I only play BF4 so it's not a problem and for general use only thing not working is 1080@60fps youtube playback.

Plays half-life, halo CE, Far Cry, and Portal so far. But I have another PC for gaming. I'd like to try and transplant a 1080p 144hz screen into this laptop for the better aesthetic

A GTX960 is a shit card that I got cheap. It runs relatively low power and fans will turn off under light load. It's adequate, and I don't need a Quadro or other 'workstation' card.
