If you mean a Windows 7 key, just get Windows 7 Pro and do a search for "windows 7 mak" and you'll find some MAKs (Multiple Activation Key) that still have some activations on 'em.

Install the OS, activate it with a MAK, then image it using True Image or Macrium Reflect or whatever (Clonezilla, etc) and then if you decide you need to start over again on the same hardware it's as easy as restoring that image in a few minutes time.

There are solutions, one just has to pay attention to what's available.

As a boomer who's struggling with the same questions, I've found the best distro to be Debian as it's the most like windows 7. Updates are tested before released so it won't break your system. And you can rune Debian offline for years if you wanted too..much better than the retarded bleeding edge model. Steam works on Linux, it's just some windows software and games that won't run.

In the cases that you need to use windows 7, setup a virtual machine with gpu pasthrough.

The only thing that is stopping win7 from working on newer systems is UEFI class 3. If your bios supports legacy with csm then you can easily use it.
There are 2 options to fix it. Wait until ReactOS gets UEFI support, and use their vga.sys driver in win7.
Or somehow replace vga.sys with basicdisplay.sys driver from win8 or 10

That is why I had no other choice but to get a Mac and get used to iWorks. So far it is managable, and with news of governments banning MS Office, many of my clients began being more open with the file formats.
Actually a good portion, somewhere around 30% have switched over to Libre Office or one of its variants, so it is still not a lost cause to lose Win10 shittery from the daily business.

If you want to run Windows (which you shouldn't) you should absolutely install each and every update to keep yourself safe from vulnerabilities.

If you don't install update, or when M$ ceases support for Win7, your computer is a ticking time bomb. Maybe that website you visit infects you, maybe you download a file with an exploit in it. You're walking a tightrope over a field of razor blades when you don't install updates.

There is literally no reason to use Windows 7 now. Windows 10 exists if you're a manchild who still plays games and there are plenty of superior GNU/Linux distributions to choose from if you want a good operating system.

I AM STAYING ON WIN7 for games, general productivity, and the vast library of software we know and love. We do need to adapt if we wish to minimize the botnet in our lives. It does become tiresome at times. Fight the good fight fren. If you plan on staying on Win7, lurk and ask questions when you see the /FrenlyWindowsThreads/. Start gathering & archiving your programs, drivers, sites, etc. Get off-line installers for the .Net Framework, DirectX, Re-distributable runtimes for everything. It will start disapprearing soon. One day, the zoomers will repent....

windows 7's telemetry can be completely disabled if you know what you're doing

here's the step list:
wipe your hard drive, preferably with DBAN (optional, but a good precaution, quick erase is fine, DoD short if you're paranoid and anything else is overkill)
install windows 7
run DAZ Loader
run Simplix
run Ancile script
it's good to debloat but it doesn't effect piracy
then, windows update will be disabled. you'll have all the non-spyware updates, and if you want to update just download the new simplix patch on the 15th of each month
