If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Do not dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Did /fglt/ already decide which distro is the overall best one? If so, please tell.

Install linux for niggers

Leave this board forever.

There isn't a "best distro". It's lie asking what the best breed of dog is. Each one has different uses.

Should I install proprietary AMD drivers on my install of Debian 10?
My laptop is running an HD6370m and the out of the box experience with the radeon driver seems to be alright But would I benefit at all from going with Catalyst?
Jason Morales
You literally can't use catalyst anymore bud. Your only options for modern display stacks are amdgpu(-pro) and radeon, and amdgpu-pro is not worth using unless for very specific workloads where it has a minor performance boost. stick with amdgpu or radeon, whichever your card architecture supports
Jacob Brown
I can't login into xfce on Fedora. Entering the password is needed over and over again. The other de-s are working properly. Is there a way to fix this?
Well it's working fine without touching it for most of my workloads so guess I'm not fiddling with that.
Another question though. I'm using XFCE, I'd like to get a little network icon thingy at the bottom I can use to switch wifi networks, turn off bluetooth and such.
The Wavelan one that comes stock is kinda shite, what's a good alternative?
Jose Edwards
sounds like your session file is borked somehow, you are getting booted back to your display manager.
to make sure that's the problem you can swap to a tty, login and try startxfce4, if that works then you just need to find out what's wrong with your session file and fix it
Luis Long
I use nm-applet for WiFi and blueman-applet for bluetooth.
Elijah Nguyen
>OPENSSH TAKING MINUTES TO BECOME AVAILABLE, BOOTING TAKES HALF AN HOUR ... BECAUSE YOUR SERVER WAITS FOR A FEW BYTES OF RANDOMNESS
I'm thinking about what other stuff I have to do to get this install a tad more usable
Jason Baker
It's actually Systemd/GNU, because Linux is literally the least important of these three.
Dominic Peterson
I want to install steam on opensuse sadly something in the kernel broke the current opensuse steam version. How can I install the steam.deb package?
William Perez
Systemd is not an operating system.
Juan Foster
Neither is Loonix.
Ayden Ramirez
You could try to extract the .deb manually, but there's bound to be incompatible libs. The best way would be to compile yourself, but since steam is proprietary, yoh can't.
Thomas Watson
i want a dog to cook for me, which breed you think is the best for that use?

When starting a youtube video there's quite a long delay before the sound starts playing Once it does it is in sync with the video, just takes a second to begin
Is there anything I can do to try and correct this?
Every time I log into my i3 debian system I am greeted with a black screen and cursor which I can control. How do I fix this?
Parker Fisher
Stop using steam.
Gabriel Ross
But i wanna play Factorio and HoI4 with my friends
Nathaniel Johnson
Weird issue man, you can copy a kernel config from another distro and compile that kernel then, is easy
Nolan Evans
Hello. My question to you is, what free program is the closest to CorelDraw, one that can handle editing .cdr files and making blueprints well. I know Inkscape, LibreOffice Draw, are they capable of performing these tasks? Is there something else?
Ian Reyes
isn't the steam snap still around? the one the solus guy was working on? last time I tried it it worked ok, you could try that
Elijah Cruz
What is the most elegant way to realize a VPN killswitch for openvpn? I'm currently using ufw with a shell script wrapper to force all outgoing connections through tun0 if active, but I wonder if there's a simpler solution. It's also annoying that I have to deactivate the killswitch in order to reconnect a dropped VPN connection.
Ryan Clark
I want to try Alpine Linux on an old netbook dual-booting with Windows. I've tried following some of the instructions on their wiki but never managed to get it working. How should I install it?
>Seth: I imagine, way back when GNU was just starting to make people realize that a (not)Unix liberated from proprietary technology was possible, there must have been a void of clarity about how free software could possibly work together. >RMS: I don't think there was any void or any uncertainty. I was simply going to follow the interfaces of BSD. heh
Xavier Johnson
Please don't use Windows. It is malware.
Adrian Peterson
Frens don't let frens use windows.
Dominic Watson
why do you want to install an obscure raw distro with a tiny community?
Jason King
It's tiny and can run a DE. My netbook is a single-core Atom and 1 GB soldered RAM. It's a nice size and weight, has a nice screen, and the battery still lasts forever. I'm also a poorfag so buying something like an X-series ThinkPad is out of the question.
Mason Flores
hey buddy, I'm such a dumbo and know absolutely nothing about networking, can you or someone here explain to me like you would to a babby how to make Openvpn work like those VPN extensions in Firefox that just have one button that changes your location, but do it system-wide and not only in the browser? It's all I need.
Angel Evans
>It's tiny and can run a DE. there are superior options like Puppy, or EasyOS
Have you tried the OpenVPN plugin for NetworkManager?
Parker Sanders
cringe
Samuel Green
>sounds like your session file is borked somehow
First I thought I could fix like that, but still dropped back to the display manager. I have no idea why is this happening...

Has anyone ever had issues with kde and 3+ monitors? i keep having issues with plasma and my layout not saving. i managed to fix by using nvidia settings and saving to xorg.conf and then i deleted mwhd.conf but after the scaling was fucked and couldnt be fixed. also anyone ever use a twm with multiple monitors is it worth it?
Hudson Ross
sorry, I don't use fedora, but try
dnf group install base-x dnf install mesa-libEGL
I'm guessing you never tried startxfce4 from a tty (press control+alt+f1 or control+alt+f2 etc etc) but it would probably give you some relevant and helpful error messages that you could use to troubleshoot this problem. I'm kind of guessing here, you haven't really given much to go on
Camden Price
i3 is pretty amazing for multiple monitors, dwm is if you actually intend to know what you're doing. i3 is sorta like closest to "default as intended" the same way float heavy dynamic window managers do it. If that's not your thing, try awesome and if even THAT doesn't stick give rat poison a final go. If none of those take your fancy twm aint for you.
Adam Reed
Thank you user for the help and for being patient with me! I will try startxfce4, and I'll check these >dnf group install base-x >dnf install mesa-libEGL too.
>lost my keyboard >laptop keyboard is unusable >manjaro i3 now how do i install kde or xfce? do i just pacman the whole thing and done or do i have to configure more stuff

What the fuck man, I update manjaro and now apparently japanese is just squares. 0)how do i fix 1)is there any distro that doesnt just do random shit like this? fedora, debian, mint, the list goes on
my situation: - I have a windows 10 pc with OpenSSH 7.7p1 (LibreSSL 2.6.5) - am using that frequently to push to github and access my Raspberry Pis. - the Key (RSA 2048 bit) is stored in my KeePassXC database and added to the openssh agent when unlocked the database
now i recently installed Raspbian Buster on one of the Pis and added my ssh key to the authorized keys. i get the warning warning: agent returned different signature type ssh-rsa (expected rsa-sha2-512)
then i created a new ssh key with rsa-sha2-512 and added that to the authorized key list. The same error appears tho.
If its helping: the Pi uses OpenSSH_7.9p1 Raspbian-10, OpenSSL 1.1.1c
and no, i cant change that pc to Linux

install the japanese font?
Jonathan Ward
...
Leo Morales
sucks for you
Ian Johnson
theyre installed, but to check i installed every other font and restarted
Nolan Hernandez
Fedora defaults to Wayland for GNOME, but you're going to have X pulled in if you install something like XFCE. It should have X+MESA installed period for xwayland, but maybe not all the pertinent drivers; not a Wayland user.
See /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors for clues. If either of those don't exist, you can page through `journalctl -b0`. If you didn't know about `dnf group install`, try `dnf group install 'XFCE Desktop'` instead of however you put XFCE on there.

anyone use a synology NAS? trying to setup an ssd cache in a friends' one, got a pci-e adapter with two m.2 sata slots on it, and the disks do show up under /dev as "/dev/nvc1" and "/dev/nvc2", i've never seen "nvc#" before, and apparently neither has synology, because it's web interface says there's no ssds installed what do?
Disk /dev/nvc1: 111.8 GiB, 120040980480 bytes, 234455040 sectors Disk /dev/nvc2: 111.8 GiB, 120040980480 bytes, 234455040 sectors
also posted in sqt, but since synology DSM is technically a linux distro, if a very unusual one, maybe someone here has played around with one more
Do you have proprietary drivers installed? If so, try uninstalling them, rebooting and then trying again.
Also how do you start your i3? If with startx, post your .xinitrc.
Isaiah Roberts
Try it with a vm first. Sounds a bit iffy.
Brody Anderson
Check the Manjaro forums, that is the best I can give you. Manjaro has had some really weird bugs and I gave it up for vanilla arch.
