Anything that's a job - that is, something you have to do 40+ hours a week because you need the paycheck in order to keep a roof over your head - is something that you'll soon come to despise doing, even if you liked it before. The fact that you have to do it, and have to do it for long periods, come what may, makes it shitty. In addition to the fact that with most jobs, the appealing part is a small part of what you actually spend your time doing. Meetings, inventory, dealing with customers, etc are present in all jobs, and nobody likes them.

I have a master's degree (I think that's the equivalent, I'm in Europe) in applied mathematics. I'm in the R&D department of a big company doing simulation, developing methods to compute physical models. So it's not pure mathematics, but it's what I enjoy doing day to day. I do quite a bit of programming, but it's just a tool to test my maths.

I would yell at the kids by increasing the volume on my speaker and pocket the money for labs instead of doing them.
